The Convoy's First Line, A U-Boat's Shield

When attacking a convoy: Let the first line of ships go by unscathed. This will create a shield of noise between the U-Boat and the lead escort. Chances are the lead escort won't even be able to hear your launching of torpedoes. Later, your high speed dash and wiggle-waggle while go you go deep will also be more difficult to detect.

In most cases I've used this tactic, escorts never bothered me.

I agree it's a valid method, but only If there's bigger or equally big ships in the second and third row, or a capital ship in the middle. if the only really big targets are in the firt row I tend to shoot early and magnetic so I can hit one or 2 of the ones farther from my boat then use one fish on the first and closest merchant

yes I am a bit of a tonnage hound

The Bigger ships tent to be in the center colums. I skip the small fry and go for the fat targets, more tonage, more renown and Uncle Karl like me more when I do.

The Escorts don't seem to come into the center if the convoy to search for you, unless you get spotted.

hmm, I've noticed them try to navigate through several rows of zigzagging ships, which is hilarious because that's when they lose track of me, It's also fun to see a huge C3's bow towering over a piddly little flower corvette that's trying to get out of the way

on that note, why do all ships in SH3 seem to have brakes?

Brag dear fellow what the hell is a wiggle-waggle? You mention it quite a lot and I have yet to come across any reference in any reputable historical works about the Kriegsmarines finest wiggle-waggling their way out of difficulty

Normally the wiggle waggle is only legal for Kaleuns named Helga , when others do it the Kriegsmarine does not speak about it:p

but sillyness aside, it's his patented get out of davy jones' locker free card, I'm sure he'll inform you

Fogh, old chap!
Now pay attention as I will reveal the secret of the wiggle-waggle,

Fire your last tube.
Order flank speed and a depth of 120 meters. change course 20 degrees (the wiggle)

The idea is to get away from datum where the escorts will begin looking for you.

At 50-60 meters go silent (1 knot) change course another 20 degrees (the waggle ) and drift down,

Now you can sit back, relax and have a cup of tea. Of course Tommy doesn't always respect your well deserved break.

It works most of the time. This patrol, I attacked a convoy six times, had not had a single DC dropped closer than 500 meters.

Last patrol, got pounded a couple of times.

Doenitz told me he finds your serious attitude comendable. But he still remembers the Irish convoy caper. :rotfl: :rotfl:
