Default Auto targeting - no usually "solution"

I just want to find a ship, move into position (usually off to its side, me not moving waiting for it to pass in front of me), and have the speed, ID, AOB, BFD, whatever automatically figured out... then say "fire" and see if I hit the darn thing. I'm the captain, right? Aren't I supposed to have crew members doing all this form me? I want to play the game from a high-level, not low, detail, nitty-gritty level.

Sim/shmim, I doubt the captain was running around the sub spinning this dial, grabbing that slide rule, moving those levers... Captians issue orders. I just want to
  • find the ship
  • approach with stealth
  • indicate (lock) what I want to shoot
  • determine the right moment
  • and shoot it!!!
Problem? The game usually doesn't do anything to the torpedo. It just goes straight out the front of my sub. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it has that line on the attack-map out the front of the sub indicating the path the torpedo takes. I found 101 threads here about manually targeting. I'm a casual gamer, who's usually surfing the web on the other PC or watching TV while playing with my feet up on my desk... I'm not interested in stop-watches, slide-rules or AOBs. (Great if you are, I just want to play it more causually than that).

How do I get a solution when I don't have "manual targeting" checked?

I "lock" it on the scope.
I've found it in the recon manual and clicked the check-box to send it to the TDC.
I've tried "track target" (the red light in the left slide-in box on the F3 screen) and turned that off
I've tried it "L" locked and not-locked

Sometimes I have that line on the attack-map indicating the torp path, sometimes I don't... it's really annoying trying to sink a ship by getting into point blank range because the torpedo's just go straight no matter what.
