Default Decision dilemma

Does anybody categorically know if you have to be within visual range to receive credit for a sinking? I'm playing GWX.

Patrolling my grid in BE31 when a convoy contact appeared on the map about 10 nm from my position travelling at 9 knots. No sooner had I ordered right full rudder to get perpindicular to the reported course when the lookouts spotted the lead escort coming straight at me. He wasn't after me I just happened to be right in the path of the herd. I went to 30m and lay stopped until he passed and then popped up to periscope depth to find myself right in the line of the 2nd column and I had to go to full astern to avoid getting run over by a small merchant. I picked out a large merchant and medium cargo in the third column and fired two spread salvoes. I got one hit on the merchant and a double on the cargo, all magnetic pistols. I dived to 100m but the hunters (sounded like three of them) were frankly crap, this being Sep 1939 and the DC attack was so far away my hydrophone bloke didn't even report them. 30 mins later I went back to periscope depth to find the large merch dead in the water and on fire and the convoy zigzagging away to england including my cargo with two big holes in it.

My dilemma is this. The large merchant will sink I'm sure of it, its only a question of when and what I'd like to do is follow the convoy in case it changes course and I lose my prey. Of course if I hare off after the convoy dont find it and dont witness the sinking of the first ship I'll have expended four eels for nothing Also the tailend escort is still in periscope sight so if I fire another torp to put it down he's gonna come back and occupy me for another hour. What to do:hmm:

I'd wait for the merchant to sink or give him another torpedo, that way you can be sure to sink something. It's unlikely the convoy will disappear after just one or two hours. After this escort is done with you, you could even just follow it back to the convoy.

It just bugs me to use another torp on a ship thats clearly going down. And the convoy was on a course of nearly due north which means they will change course soon enough to head for england so I have to get onto their starboard flank to have a chance to spot them if they do. And if I'm racing up the starboard side out of sight I wont see if my cargo ship which took 2 hits drops back. Would be so so much easier if they just showed up as sank regardless of your position

I don't know for certain that you have to be within visual range, but I do know for a fact that you have to be within a certain range to get credit for the kill. Sucks, but thats how it is.

A bird in the hand.... or seagull as it were

Better to confirm the kill of one merchant than to move on and hope that you can sink something in the convoy. You might end up with no kills at all

I am sure that Dönitz will understand when you tell him "I was pretty sure that merchant would sink, that's why I left it afloat Sir". Maybe you will be promoted to Barnacle Scraper 3rd class

Take the confirmed kills you can get, its gonna to be a long war.

I use a simple rule for this issue.

If you are still within Hydrophone range of the convoy/ships then you will be creditited for the sinking. I mean max hydrophone range, all stop, silent & 40m. So realistically you're looking a somewhere between 30-50km.

Just shadow the convoy on either flank and you will get credit. Even if you don't you'll know for next time.

34 km, to be precise.
