Default Scapa Flow

Hi All,

Love this board, love this game. I'm on No-GWX, my 4th patrol heading to AM 32. Thought I'd stop by for a cup of coffee at Scapa Flow, oh sink a capital ship or too and haul out of there. But to my surprise I'm at periscope depth and all of a sudden I go to 0 knots, flooding in the Forward Torpedo room. I look out the periscope slightly below the waterline and there's an underwater wall!! I go to a previous save, try another approach, same thing. Another approach, same thing!

Kudos to those blasted Englishmen! They learned their lesson from Prien in '39! I'm assuming there is NO way in to Scapa Flow by March 1940. I've looked on all the dedicated Newbie threads (which have made life easier for me), Wikipedia, previous threads, nada. Any input on this? I've noticed these walls are always where there seem to be light houses off the shore. There must be a gap somewhere in these walls becuase Corvettes are mving over said troubled areas with no problem. Good Hunting.

Try these links. They have some tips that might help you out:

The "walls" are actually anti-submarine nets and were laid to prevent people like you and me from messing up the RN's day.

You said you are no-GWX so I assume you have no mods? If no mods then I don't think the info below will help.

The entrance you should always use for Scapa is the same as Prien. go to the eastern side and manouver around the block ships through one of the narrow channels taht lead into the harbour.

If it was me, I'd do a 180 and get out of that death trap! Welcome aboard!

The Anti Sub net extends for about 1200m on both sides of the southern enterance. Good way to be sure to avoid it it to use the compas tool and draw a 1.5k circles on both sides of the pass. Then go between and you should get through. Beware that on the north western entrance is mined, so there is only a small gap to escape from. They are formed at angles sort of like this: /
/

They are at the top western entrance. The top field stretches for about 3,2km and the bottom for about 4,6km. So the gap ain't that big.

On an unmodded SHIII there are not so many good targets. until the 4th of Oct 1939 there is an auxilirary crusier and unti the 14th Oct 1939 there is a revenge battleship. Note they are not docked in the harbour, they are anchored in the bay. To located the revenge take the right most tip of the harbour bay (about 1km from the word Scapa Flow) and draw it west for about 3,5km. Then south 2,7km and thats about where the ship should be. Note when its attacked ALL of the patrol destroyers will head to that location. here is a link to a thread I made detail my sinking of the battleship. It may give you some hints. It was done using Grey Wolfs Expansion (GWX) mod but on Stock SHIII it is easier. Once you hit the ship, jsut escape west through the mine field, the destroyers will be looking the wrong way.

Hope this helps some

Thanks for the all the help, guys! Since it's March 1940, I'll continue with skirting to the North of the English Isle and take out the shipping. I torpedoed a 7900 ton C3, one hit. It was set to Impact, and 90 degrees to target. It went up like a volcanoe, must have been loaded down with ammo. I'm hoping to go after some capital ships, say a carrier or destroyer. It seems running into those is a roll of the dice. I guess later in the war, carriers are deployed as convoy protection so maybe then. As for now though, the invasion of Norway is a month or two away. Based on my wikipedia reading, the U-boats did some action, I'm hoping my U-54 gets into the thick of it. I just transferred from the 1st to the 7th Flotilla. What can I say, I need new challenges in my virtual life.
