Default what the!!!?

i was on course to my grid when i get a report of a contact at long range, this turned out to be a town class DD its late 1941 and im in a IXB. i work out if i stop he will pass me at about 1500m. so all stop 15m depth silent running. as he closes i hear the dreaded "ping" how on earth did he know he know i was there

I believe that the ASDIC was always pinging aboard escorts regardless of what duties they were performing, be it patrol or travel.

That may be the case, but shouldn't the ping be heard from a distance, before it gets close enough to be effective?
Somewhat like radar that can be detected by ESM before the radar gets close enough to get returns.

ah right so even though he might not have known i was there coz the asdic is always active he wouldve picked me up anyway? no matter how quiet i was being

Just because you can hear the "ping" doesn't mean he has picked you up. On several occasions I could hear them pinging and then dropping DCs several hundred meters away from my position.
If it goes like ping.............ping..............ping, he is just looking around, not necessery in the right place.
If you hear PING...PING...PING...PING, then he likely has you.

Yup, just bad luck if he gets your return. There's a war on where stuff happens
