Default Girlfriend and pawn shop

Broke my heart.

Sixth patrol GWX 90%. Was moving on the surface at night when my WO spotted a merchant. To conserve torpedos I decided to use the deck gun. I fired my first round and she turned two spotlights on me and a round went over my head. Rather then dive I decided to try to take out her gun. Bad move, guess who my gunner was. She took out my starboard engine and I tried to escape however I became the hunted rather then the hunted. I tried to submerge however took another hit which was enough to flood the ship while I was diving. New boat for me I guess. The great submariner in the sky told me that my girlfriend of 6 months took my Iron Crosses to the pawn shop. My first and last armed merchant.

It looks like you were too close. If you see any guns on merchant through the UZO and you're keen on shelling it, do it from the distance, always!

If you still want to shell armed merchants try to aim for their guns and make sure you're travelling fast and you change direction often. It does work but it's very very dangerous.

And keep your distance to 3k or better 4k meters. You won't hit often but the merchant gunners will hit even less if at all.

Gun duels in GWX are non-profit operations. I lost two good men and received heavy damage by engaging a bloody armed tug, of all things.

That 4" gun will do some damage

Took on an armed trawler in the channel in a gun duel
Sunk it but took some heavy damge in the process
Next time I had to dive deep to avoid a DD - Uboat destroyed by pressure
