Default do they come more useless than me?

hello folks, haven't been on here for a coupla days on account of fixing folks computers ( like London buses, they always come along two or three at a time) but I have had snatches of SH3 in between jobs, hoping to finally get to my designated patrol ground in one piece, with a whole crew and without using up all my diesel... well, today, left in peace cos I have a chest infection and can't do more than squeak at people, hubs went off to church without me, so I had several hours to do just what I want with..woww I thought, scrub the washing up - SH3, here I come. So, very carefully I come out of Kiel, no more bangs or scraped hulls for this Kaleun, and begin to make my way to my patrol area. By swapping between diesel and battery I got there with optimum fuel reserves, a rested crew and no disasters, and all aglow with pride I thought I will just check my brief again... and then.... oh NO, I don't believe it!. AN52 it says... and I have spent the whole morning wending my way to AO52......eeearggghh, or something like that. So I have sacked myself, booted me out of subs and replaced my four failed patrols with a new career - and THIS time....ggrr.

Can you tell me though, why cannot I go higher than x8TC in some parts of the canal ( I fear the war will have finished before I get to my patrol area otherwise) also, who is this Bernard I keep reading about?

I did have other questions, but have forgotten them temporarily, and anyway, will probably find the answers in the guides.

I believe time compression is limited if enemies are nearby, there might be other reasons as well...:hmm:

no enemies in the Kiel Canal. I thought maybe it was to do with narrow bits or shallows. In some parts I can go up to 32 or 64 TC

Hi She-wolf.

You need to open SH3 Commander, hit the options tab and change the time compression near land to something higher than 8.

And don't worry about going where bdu send you, I tend to go where I want and I think (although someone here will know for sure) that it doesn't make too much of a difference to your renown.

Hey there
Bernard is the one guilty of placing magnets by your compass, showing East instead of West
Tc when near land, you can set it in The SH3Commander, it´s a must have
Someone will tell you witch file to edit if you want to do it manually, I don´t remember, using the Cmdr

Default Fuel Conservation

Hi She Wolf,
I hate to spoil your illusion but using the batteries does not save fuel. When they are recharged your speed drops. Ergo, less distance covered for the same fuel comsumption. I find the best economy is to transit at Ahead 1/3 to far areas using 2048 TC. I still get up to 35 FPS and have actually used 4096 but kept having collisions!!!!
We must welcome a female skipper to the "Brotherhood".

To explain Bernard:
He was on watch on the bridge yesterday. This led to events that got me killed. In another patrol, he launched a torpedo at an impossible range at the most critical moment (I survived that Bernard moment) He was who went to flank speed astern instead of slow ahead in full view of the nurses at the dock. He is the idiot that stares at me on the bridge through his binoculars. Visit the humorous pictures thread -- plenty of bernard there.

Hi She-Wolf,

Glad to hear you're getting some R&R from RL, so to speak, and can finally close all outer hatches, stock up on canned food and sail out of port for some convoy attacks against zose Tommies

As a few of our comrades have said, the issue with the TC stuck at 8 is due to your being so close to land and in shallow water. This can be changed a couple of ways, easiest is through SH3 Commander. Here is a rundown of the settings I find most comfortable to use:

Realtime: 1 (Obviously!)
Maximum: 1024 (Some go higher than this, but I am rarely at max TC, and not for long in areas likely to see aircraft)
When Game Paused: 0
When Near Land: 128 (For the sake of my crew's fatigue levels when leaving and returning from port-See note below)
When Critically Damaged: 1
When Low Crew Efficiency: 1
When Enemy Plane(s) detected: 1
When Enemy Ship(s) detected: 1
When Receive Radio Report: 1
When Being Hunted: 64 (Have had mixed success in the past using TC when being hunted, best to shake off those pesky escorts in realtime)
When Hunting: 64 (Handy at night when you are Ahead Flanking to overtake your prey)
When in 3D Views: 32 (Very important you don't change this! This will affect your crew fatigue levels if you adjust it-See note below)
Character Animations: 4
Sound Effects: 2
Particle Rendering: 8

Note:In GWX and a few of the other supermods, travelling at 64 TC or higher does not cause your crew to fatigue, nor do they rest. It's a kind of handy limbo, if you will! This is based on the "When in 3D Views" setting, it is always 1 setting higher than your value for this. So, if you set your 3D Views TC to 64, you would have to run at 128 TC for your crew to stay in Limbo, if you set your 3D Views TC to 256, you need to run on 512 TC and so on. This is really handy as it eliminates the constant need to change your watches every so often due to fatigue. You still need to rotate your crew, but nowhere near as often. I've found that having 3 Bridge watches, and 2 for the Engines, Command Room and Radio/Hydrophone room works great. I can spend an entire week or more at sea and not have to change my crew around.

I pretty much use TC all the time, except when either hunting or being hunted. Generally I run it at 64 and settle back in my chair to read Das Boot or Iron Coffins

As for Bernard, I think it was Dowly who first brought our attention to this fellow. Bernard is the scapegoat for any and all mishaps that occur on board your boat. Dud torpedo? Bernard didn't set it right. Crash dive without getting depth under keel and hit the bottom? Bernards fault. Bridge crew don't spot an enemy until he's lobbing 4 inch shells down your conning tower? It's cos Bernard was on watch. Watch out for him, BdU has a habit of trying to slip him on board a new Kaleun's boat.

As I've said in another thread, I'm superstitious about Bernard. I won't sail out of port with a crewman named Bernard on board. Even the ones named Bernhardt are pushing it.
