Default Evasion question

Ok so I attack a convoy last night, all went very well. However after I fire my torps I dive to 160 meters. DDs come and start pinging me, so I dive more... and more... and more... Eventually I'm well in the red and still I'm being detected! I was in silent running mode and doing 1 knot. Also this is beginning of the war, 2nd patrol. How could they detect me that deep at one knot at the beginning of the war? My understanding is that their sonar isnt effective that deep during this time period, and it would be hard to hear me at 1 knot at silent running. Nevertheless they knew where I was and I was getting DC'd for a half hour. I did get away fortunately, but it took a long time. Is this the norm? I dont remember having any problem at all getting away at that depth in the past.... Suggestions? Ideas? Thanks guys

That is about the norm. More than likely they were not very accurate with the DC. The DD will hang out for quite a while and allow the convoy to keep on going. Then the DD speed off to catch up with them. So yeah, run silent, 2kts is fine, change course often and go to at least 200m deep. Sit back and relax it is going to be a long day.

They could as well not know your position and drop the trash in a location far away from yours. But then you still hear the bombs.

Diving may be not enough. Make sure you change your course at least slightly from time to time so that they don't estimate your future positions.

Avoid hard rudder angles, try to operate it manually and apply like 5-10 degrees right/left.

Be patient. Half an hour is nothing. To say the truth, it's a minimum.

You did evade them! Yes--at 2 knots they'll have trouble hearing you. If they drop right on top of you, go to ahead flank 'til you reach 6 knots, then order 2 knots again. No sharp turns, but keep changing heading.

remember, just because you go into silent running that doesnt mean they cant find you
you will only be hard to find on the hydrophone but they have sonar to
soo try to stay away from the DD's
