The submarine was originally conceived to be a naval weapon for destroying enemy ships. Submarines have proven themselves time and time again to be highly successful in this role. In the post-Cold War era, however, the United States enjoys supremacy on the high seas and the traditional mission of the navy’s submarine force – to sink an enemy’s warships and savage its merchant shipping – has evaporated.
