Special Project: 2007 Subsim Almanac!

The submarine was originally conceived to be a naval weapon for destroying enemy ships. Submarines have proven themselves time and time again to be highly successful in this role. In the post-Cold War era, however, the United States enjoys supremacy on the high seas and the traditional mission of the navy’s submarine force – to sink an enemy’s warships and savage its merchant shipping – has evaporated.

The Subsim Special Project. Announcement coming... :ping:

Although I didn’t know it at the time, April 29, 1952 was to be a decisive day in my life. On that day in the Bahamas, scientists from Bell Labs demonstrated their new Lofar low-frequency passive detection system to a group of high-ranking Navy officials. A US diesel submarine provided services, snorkeling in rectangular box patterns at increasing distances from the island. The target sub had been requested to operate two diesels at the same speed. Several hours into the day, the sub received an amazing radio message: that the port diesel was running 10 rpm too fast. A tachometer check showed this to be true. Naturally, the skipper reported this incident to his superiors. In time it trickled up the chain of command. Whatever it was, the submarine Navy wanted it.

What did you do? Implement IUSS in DW or something?

Ultraboy 10-28-06 12:14 PM

Hmm... A "Subsim Special Project" thread in both the DW and SH3 forums... :hmm:

This can only mean that some sort of DW/SH3 crossover mod is in the pipeline!

Just think of the possibilities!

- Will the U-Boat's state-of-the-art "rubber coating" fool the American ADCAP?
- How well will the MH-60 stand up against the 88mm deck gun?
- How will the Frigate contend with non-acoustic "dumb" torpedoes? The nixie is useless!!!
- What narrowband frequency lines do a type VIIC show up on? NOBODY KNOWS!!!

...and finally we'll get to live out all those 21st century tech vs. WW2 tech scenarios everyone dreams of...

Onboard a Los Angeles class SSN

"Well boys, so much for the vaunted type XXI, we've got her on the towed-array! Now, to just change depth slightly..."

"The towed array has failed, sir."

"Nooooooo!"

---

Like I said, think of of the possibilities. :D

yeah, a real life "Down Periscope" would be funny as hell.
