maybe I'm mistaken, but the 2nd pic is from museum sub.
white color scheme was painted long after WW2...

White was the standard even during the war. Look at pictures of U-505, that has been restored to its wartime appearance. Eggshell white was regulation. The dark stuff is a holdover from Das Boot, pure movie stuff. We have documentation of the wartime regulations as part of the Crush Depth project.

I am very interested in the answer to this, I have wanted a correct interior for a long time. Seems like it would be a tremendous amount of work.

Why would you do that? In game interior looks nothing like that anyway. What you see there is just a model without wall and pipes textures...launch the game and then look at the interior, not from goblin...

I would say that it is dark (instead of a pretty green) to hide the lack of some detail in the image... Less work for the devs... much harder to count bolts, and notice that pressure tanks are missing, etc... - illusionary!
