Some advice from someone who knows. NEVER EVER buy a game with TAGES as the DRM, it will ruin your game even with legit titles. TAGES is a DRM system thats hooked in to different parts of the game. If at any time TAGES is not happy it will screw up the game data deliberately to ruin the game. Thats its function, not to make you put a disc in or to ensure you have the correct version. Its just there for totally f..k up the game data while your playing if it detects something it doesn't like. And if you have any kind of burning software or disc publishing it WILL stop working untill you remove said burning software. As for mods........forget about it, TAGES has in the past refused to run with any kind of mod whatsoever, and if you use a "patcher" like TDW's stuffs it will gaurantee to ruin the install.

All in all its one of the THEE most draconian DRM's there is.

So the Amazon version can be modded but the Steam and Ubisoft downloads can't.

Was thinking about finally buying the game. Glad I came to these forums before I did.

Thank you Gentlemen.

Got my digital copy of SH5 here, for the princely sum of £0.83p

uplay key, digital download, mods up and plays just fine

What the hell it was 1 Euro here in my country, I bought one just to see if it works.

So I can confirm this is legit, you get the key, you paste it into your uplay client and you get the game. And it is a PATCHABLE ONE (1.15 version use the updater to get it to 1.2 then patch it)

I started playing 4 again after about a year off. Saw that 5 was going for ten bucks. So, went to the SubSim store and bought the game. I think I just wasted my money. I can't believe how bad 5 is. I've been sub simming since Silent Service on the C64. In my opinion. This is the worst sub sim ever.

I have the Gold Edition that I downloaded from Steam. I had a disk copy that I gave to my nephew a few montrhs ago. I wish I never had. The Gold Edition often crashes at the oddest times, will many times reload the saved games incorrectly, robs you of campaign points every chance it gets, and generally seems dedicated to frustrating your entire gaming experience.

I plan to purchase another disk copy as soon as possible, because I never seemed to have near the problems with it as I do now. While I still enjoy the game overall, I shall never order a Steam download and completely trust it again.....Had many problems with the download of Shogun II that I downloaded from Steam. It has yet to even open from the start up properly, and they won't reimburse me for the 49.00+ that I paid for it. They keep on saying that it is somehow my fault, and keep giving me advice that won't work. Never again!!!!!

Customer service sucks from Steam. I may as well be talking to a guy from India as well as expect good service. (What a deal......Really???!!)

You've been a member for four years. One would hope you would have read all the ongoing controversy before making your decision to purchase.

The bottom line is that out of the box SH5 is dreadful. Even the people who now love the game agree with that. In that light the question arises: Have you tried any of the mods yet? Much work has done in improving the game, and the improvements have been vast, and a great many people are of the opinion that SH5 is the best sub sim ever.

There is nothing wrong with SH5

Time and time again people with completely no understanding how SH5 works come out with these crass statements.

Surely there is more than enough forum posts with people like Sober, vdr1981, Sjizzle and others explaining how mods add enjoyment and immersion to the game.

Whether you have 3-4-5 out of the box they are all crap until you add mods and mods that fix the games flaws.

Modders have taken a lot of their time to give us today an extremely playable SH5

Have a look at my tutorials posts and you might get a better understanding of SH5

With all due respect, these two statements appear to directly contradict each other.

I understand that you are trying to defend the game that you enjoy. A bit more clarity might make a stronger argument.

While I respect your opinion Berester, I completely disagree with it. There is plenty wrong with Sh5 in my view.

Whats "wrong" and "right" is subjective. To me its "wrong" sh5 only has a German campaign, as is the lack of subs to chose from. The UI is horrendous and the requirement to ALWAYS start at the dockyard is tedious and highly aggravating due to AI harbour ships. And the complete lack of crew management is a real disapointment, being replaced with a horrible moral system for officers. Oh and the bad coding.

Which is why I think Sh4 is a superior game, even if its not a superior sim or as good looking.

No game is or will ever be perfect.

What I was trying to say is in my view, and by the looks of it many others, SH5 works when good mods are added.

While you may disagree that is your prerogative.

People like Dr Jones 237,000 hits, Fifi 49,000 hits, Sober 500,000 hits, TDW 1.7 million hits, Trevally 556,000 hits, vdr1981 96,000 hits and others modders have put a lot of hard work in to make the game SH5 more playable.

From the received responses it’s not all doom and gloom.

Celestial fixes using the sextant, full control of the dive planes, being able to set independent engine controls, real navigation, are just some of the additions that have been added for those who want to take the game to another level.

I play both SH4 and SH5 most days.

They both have their strengths and weaknesses.

There are bits of SH4 I would have liked to have seen in SH5 and vice versa.

Every game we play is a compromised in some way.

Docking does not bother me in fact I always select dock in SH4 as to me it all part of the overall experience.

I found having to move the crew irritating in RFB to three different stations to protect them in the event of coming under attack which why I prefer to play TMOwtw 2.50

It may be that my expectations are lower than others.

After all it is only a game that we are playing.

Peter

Copied this post from another thread on this forum. I believe it speaks for itself.

So do not worry too much about ctd's around the Danzig Bay area.

If you get them on your next patrol then start worrying.
