For you, maybe. I use FLB_Sales's 'Simfeeling 6-Dials' mod, which removes the interface entirely. Every single item on the screen becomes a slideout, so I don't have to see anything at all unless I need it. To me that's much more realistic.

Ooh that's sounds like a good mod I'm going to look into. I've recently been trying to take the interface off using 'del' key, making commands with the keyboard only putting it back on when I need it

Be warned, though - it requires some work. You have to edit the menu.ini yourself. It's and easy copy-and-paste, but it takes patience.

I'll get of my soap box now and enjoy SH3, with my new GUI and what mods I have also installed to make it enjoyable for me, at least.

But Buchheim served on a U-Boat as an official naval correspondent,as well as a lieutenant on minesweepers and destroyers during WW2,I think this more than qualifies him to "preach" from a perch.

That's my point. He was not a "real" u-boat sailor, and some (not all) of the men who were there said he got it wrong. Don't mistake me; I love the movie and I love the book. I was only pointing out that some of the criticisms he levelled at the movie were also levelled at his book by some of those he served with.

Thanks for the heads-up. I checked out the mod site just before reading your reply and it does look pretty awesome. I agree with RustySubmarine as I'm not very good at mods that involve changing menus. I started installing mods in SH5 but spent most of my time changing and finding mods rather than actually sinking ships ![]() I'm thinking SH3 might be my limit for realism and immersion ![]() ![]() |

Try the OLC Interface Glenn, if you haven't tried this before, apart from the one Sailor Steve is on about, it must be the next best. I have been using it over the last few days and it's pretty good. I think I will be sticking with this one. On my third patrol atm, found a four ship convoy in the Irish Sea, just of Holyhead, (decided to take this route for a change, round the north coast of Ireland). two large tankers, a large freighter and a tramp steamer (no escorts) sunk all four over a period of one hour, had to give chase for the second tanker, but she got a fish in her belly, from my stern tube. Boy what an explosion, must have ruptured one of her fuel tanks. She listed to port soon after hitting her and then one massive explosion, before sinking beneath the waves. Had to crash dive, soon after as I was attacked by a couple of Hurricanes, just off the Bristol Channel, but sustained no damage and lay low until dusk, resurfaced just of the southern Irish coast and proceeded to my patrol area grid Am67, after deciding to stick to my first plotted route from Lorient.

Done a bit of mooching around harbours myself. Have you tried Scapa! Use the far north passage, and start your entry as night falls, you can sneak in so far on the surface, but avoid nights when the moon is out. Be careful as you enter the main area at the end of the channel, as there are some blockade ships, you need to keep mid channel. As soon as you clear these, submerge to periscope depth and rig for silent running. There are a few Destroyers patrolling, but these will anchor around 11pm - midnight and you can pick one of these off with a fish from your stern tube on your way out. There is usually a couple of Capital ships anchored and a few Merchants for the picking, but take the BBs, Cruisers or AC (if you are lucky) I sunk HMS Glorious with HMS Renown when I was there. Keep silent running on all the time, until you clear the main area and enter the channel you came in at. you can clear the blockade ships submerged, but keep mid channel or you will run aground if to close to shore (there are no nets or mines in the channel (or there wasn't in early 1940 when I sneaked in) You should get out of the northern channel by about 6am, but be careful, keep submerged as you will have two or three destroyers hunting you until you can shake them off. Go deep when in deeper water and just sit it out until they call it a day. Then you can surface when all is clear. Worked ok for me!

I bought the uncut version off Amazon recently. I'm English but learning German, so I like to listen with the German audio and sometimes with the English subs to see how much I can pick up - although I've seen it so many times I remember most of the dialogue before it comes up.
Interestingly, the DVD also has an English audio track with is much more a direct translation of the German. The 'stock' English audio from the original release (the one that's with the full film on YouTube) is very toned down in terms of the obscenity the sailors talk about (ie "do you have any hairs up your arse" becomes "do you have any hairs up your nose") - ostensibly to get it past the censors for the US release. Mine seems to have all these bits directly translated into English, obscenity and all. I'm pretty sure the actors did two English versions. (Got to 34:20 in the Youtube full film) In the scene where the Old Man gets the signal on the convoy, and the 1WO keeps pestering him to read it I've heard Hubertus Bengsch (1WO) read out the convoy square. In my DVD version he mispronounces 22 as 'Two'ty Two', instead of 'Twenty Two', whereas on the YouTube version he says 'Twenty Two'. Anyone else noticed that? Oh, and I didn't know until I looked at his Wikipedia article that Bengsch also does all the dubbing for Richard Gere when his films are translated into German ... pub quiz fact there!

I also have three versions - bluray, director's cut superbit and the full length version. I have to say I like the full length version, but don't often have time to watch it! In that case, my go-to choice is now usually the bluray.

I've had the directors cut version for several years. The full length version should arrive today! I'm looking forward to watching it.
