I bought the uncut version off Amazon recently. I'm English but learning German, so I like to listen with the German audio and sometimes with the English subs to see how much I can pick up - although I've seen it so many times I remember most of the dialogue before it comes up.

Interestingly, the DVD also has an English audio track with is much more a direct translation of the German. The 'stock' English audio from the original release (the one that's with the full film on YouTube) is very toned down in terms of the obscenity the sailors talk about (ie "do you have any hairs up your arse" becomes "do you have any hairs up your nose") - ostensibly to get it past the censors for the US release. Mine seems to have all these bits directly translated into English, obscenity and all.

I'm pretty sure the actors did two English versions. (Got to 34:20 in the Youtube full film) In the scene where the Old Man gets the signal on the convoy, and the 1WO keeps pestering him to read it I've heard Hubertus Bengsch (1WO) read out the convoy square. In my DVD version he mispronounces 22 as 'Two'ty Two', instead of 'Twenty Two', whereas on the YouTube version he says 'Twenty Two'.

Anyone else noticed that?

Oh, and I didn't know until I looked at his Wikipedia article that Bengsch also does all the dubbing for Richard Gere when his films are translated into German ... pub quiz fact there!
