well...about the different Balao and Gato interiors...
the Balao and Gato classes were in the same series. Just like the Ford Mustang from 2004 and the one from 2003. They were, in effect, the same submarine, different metal, deeper diving depth, same boat.

the Balao is sometimes referred to as a Series II Gato.
just like the type VIIC improved is a VIIC/41. Same boat, just improved

EDIT: aaand because I can never reach a point, the Gato and Balao are the same boat meaning they have the same interiors. Defense rests its case.

They were very similar however the Balao class was a stronger construction, deeper diving (and more). I would prefer not to discuss this here and instead concentrate on finding a solution.

There is hope for the stand alone 600' Balao gauge Webster - That genius Mikhayl came up with a solution that should have been obvious if I wasn't so focused in one direction; and I'm about 1/3 completed so far....... we'll see. S3D is wonderful too !!

Happy Hunting!

Edit - 600' Balao is 95% done! (calibrating the gauges is a bearcat .... lol ) Might have to be satisfied with 'close' depending on the graphic - ( texture ) used. Stock & Oak Grooves are very close.... but not exactly identical after re-sizing the dials to fit.

Here's a close-up preview with Oak Groove's brass textures that I use:
(I'll upload the stock texture with the new Balao when it's done)

yes i PM him and he actually made the fix for himself but he told me he quit playing sh4 and doesnt even have the game anymore so he deleted all his files including the fix lol. :rotfl: so i guess hes strictly a sh3 guy now.

we are all very glad he remembered how he did it so he could tell it to you.

well if you stay with stock you cant go wrong because proper working stock guages is the key target IMO. not everyone wants to change the look of the stock guages and besides that, any wanted changes in textures can be reproduced without too much trouble. if it were me, i wouldnt make brass guages part of the mod unless you do a stock and a brass version and leave it up to the individual.

It will be all stock - I was just too lazy to swap out Oakgroove's texture & brass for the screenshot - stock interior, stock texture, and I'll wrap it up in JSGME format for you too.

Soon ;-)

Balao_600_stock_15.zip
Calibrated gauges and 600' depth gauge for Balao class

With credit to:
S3D
Ducimus
Mikhayl
Nisgeis
Te Kaha and Webster

What it does:
Changes the 450' depth gauges in the stock SH4 1.5 Balao class Control Room to 600'. Most interior gauges in the Control Room and Conning Tower are calibrated (close enough). The Aft Nav station gauges are changed; the Stbd telegraph is moved right to its position and the knotmeter has been placed where the Stbd telegraph was. Some of the gauges are simply tied to the battery so they move.

As usual use Shift + F2 to free cam in the Control Room - also, if you pass through the aft wall near the passageway and up you can free cam in the Conning Tower.

This is a stock SH4 1.5 only mod. The 400' test depth indicator needle for the Balao class has been changed in the NSS_Balao.cfg file to display 400' correctly on the 450' HUD depth gauge. When you hit "D" for dive you will dive to 400'... or you can click any depth on the HUD depth gauge.

I changed my mind - the NSS_Balao.zon file was not edited because in my opinion there is no reason to dive below or even close to 600' in stock SH4. You can edit your own zon file to dive the boat below 600' if you want with S3D. I do not want to make this little calibrated gauges and 600' depth gauge mod into a 'big' complicated mod.

--------------------

Optional:

With that said:
(how to make a simple mod complicated)

There is no way to dive below 450' without editing at least two - three files with Notepad. I promised to keep this mod stock so you will need to make the changes yourself. You could copy the folder structure from your game and add the two necessary folders and two modified files into this mod - and edit them before enableing this mod with JSGME:
Data\Cfg\Commands.cfg
Data\Menu\menu.txt

Make a "Cfg" folder in the Data folder of this mod and copy the Commands.cfg file from your game into this Cfg folder before editing it.

Make a "Menu" folder in the Data folder of this mod and copy the menu.txt file from your game into this Menu folder before editing it.

Note:
Don't edit the menu.txt file if you also play the U-Boat campaign because the menu.txt is shared and "Deep Dive" will show in the message box instead of "Snorkel depth". That change is recommended for the US boats only. If you do play the U-Boat campaign and don't want the "Deep Dive" to appear in the message box, don't edit menu.txt (step #3 below).

Another method to dive below 450' would be to edit the NSS_Balao.cfg in this mod with Notepad from:
CrashDepth=40;meters in the [Properties] section to:
CrashDepth=190;meters or so instead, but watch your depth... you will crush if you don't stop your dive in time!

--------------------

The 'best' way:
After editing these changes below, in the game to stop your dive and level off before reaching crush depth be sure to hit the "A" key in plenty of time to avoid diving below crush depth. Then, to dive below 450' use the key combination "Ctrl+D".

1.) Edit the NSS_Balao.cfg file in this mod with Notepad before enableing it with JSGME.
Data\Submarine\NSS_Balao\NSS_Balao.cfg

Change the "SnorkelDepth" line
From:
SnorkelDepth=15;meters

Change to:
SnorkelDepth=185;meters

2.) Edit [Cmd195] in your Commands.cfg file using Notepad:
Data\Cfg\Commands.cfg

Scroll down to [Cmd195] in your Commands.cfg file and edit this section:

From:
[Cmd195]
Name=Snorkel_depth
Ctxt=1
Str=1033
;Key0=0xBA,C,"Comma"

Change to:
[Cmd195]
Name=Snorkel_depth
Ctxt=1
Str=1033
Key0=0x44,c,"Ctrl+D"

3.) Edit one line in your menu.txt using Notepad:
Data\Menu\menu.txt

Open menu.txt with Notepad and scroll down to:

1033=Snorkel depth

Change this line to:
1033=Deep Dive

==============================
Changes I made to NSS_Balao.cfg (Data\Submarine\NSS_Balao\NSS_Balao.cfg)
==============================
[Properties]
PeriscopeDepth=18.3;meters
SnorkelDepth=15;meters
CrashDepth=40;meters
MaxDepth=122;meters - changed to display 400' test depth on the HUD depth gauge
SurfaceDepth=4.5;meters
TorpLaunchMaxDepth=30;meters
StormConditions=9,0.1;max wind speed [m/s], max rain intensity [0,1]

And in the [Unit] section:
Interior=data/Interior/NSS_Balao/NSS_Balao
to point to this new Balao interior rather than the Gato interior.

==============================
Thanks to:
UBI, S3D, Ducimus, Mikhayl, Nisgeis, Te Kaha, Webster, (and Mush Martin - for inspiring me to mod)

Happy Hunting!

Default Compressed Air gauges

Miracles happen! I figured out how to get the Compressed Air gauges in the Control Room to work.
I uploaded both files again:

Gato_Interior_gauges_ver_2.zip - (approx 17 MB)

Balao_600_stock_15_ver_2.zip - (approx 24 MB)

Hi aanker,

Most camera controls are also supported by keyboard. From my changelog:
  • 3D viewer now supports a movement speed multiplier: holding Shift will increase zoom, rotation and pan speed by 4, while holding down Control will reduce it by 4.
  • 3D viewer now supports zooming using the +/- keypad keys, freelook using left/right/up/down keys, freemove (strafe/back/forward) with 'wasd' and orbit mode with keypad arrows. Additionally, the 'C' key centers the view on current object (similar to toolbar button). Keyboard support is still a work in progress and key bindings may change in the future.
Keep up the good work,

skwas
