The boat in the picture is type IXC/40 U-550. Destroyed on April 16, 1944 by American destroyer escorts. Twelve Germans survived.

The commander of U505 commited suicide during a heavy depth charge attack?
That would be the Peter Zecsh (sp), he was universally hated by the crew of U505. They tossed his body overboard in a weighted down potato sack and the XO took command.

I was about to say, the sub in that picture is NOT u-505.
Edit:
Here is the conning tower of U505 at time of capture.

Looks nothing like the one posted above.

Its not early in the war either. U505 had 3 emblems
1. ) lion with axe under Axel-olaf Lowe.
2.) Axe with olympic rings under peter Zechs
3.) Sea shell under Harold Lange

According to the website, it says if you look closely you can still see the holes in the conning tower of the U-505. (Even though that's not a picture of her)

If anyone really wants to know the inside story on U-505, and a little about what it was like to be on a type9 uboat, i HIGHLY recommend this book:

http://www.savasbeatie.com/books/STEELBOATS_book.htm

Ive read it cover to cover, probably 4 times now (im pathetic)

This extract is good reading:

Superb find Ducimus I must have that book! I already own the brilliant Hirschfeld book based on the secret diaries of a radio operator on board U-109.
