here is a quick fix for you, download vers. 3.3 here:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=133365

And copy the install / data / env / envatl.dat to your sh4/data/env it should give you a less vivid blue water colour, but may destroy the nice sunsets in PE4 :hmm:
give up those sunsets? not frakkin likely

After finally foraying into the world of SH4, I'm making this my first mod. Looks outstanding. Thank you, and happy hunting!

Default A defense of blueness

Hey man! I'm in here out of my element because there was a guy not long ago complaining about the blue water color in PE. Then they said PE was defective because the blue bled over into the submarine, ships, etc. I now present to you, exhibit A, a photograph of my Circulation Director's boat approximately three miles offshore from Daytona Beach, Florida on Sunday, November 30, 2008. Picture, please!

First, note the color of the water. This is the Atlantic Ocean with a sand bottom putting on a most PE-style blue face! But let's look at what is remarkable in this photo. See the blue cast to the white hull and the helmsman's shirt? You're tempted to say "bad color balance", aren't you? Look, even the frothy wake to the port side is blue. You KNOW it's white!

But let's look closer. See the wake on the starboard side of the boat, which is directly illuminated by the sun. It's white! How about the glint off the bow rail. White as well. and finally, the center console is directly illuminated by the sun. White as white can be. What in hades is going on here?

I'll tell you. As light penetrates the water, it is reflected by the tiny plankton and particles. This backscattered light is blue, and the water literally glows with a blue light. You don't see it as light only because you contrast it with the direct sunlight and call it shadow. But it is illumination from the glowing water, clearly coloring the boat, the wake, the men's clothing from their true white to a pretty vivid blue. The ultimate proof of the pudding is the hull and the center console, both the same color.

Check it out! Everything shielded from the direct sunlight, and so lit by the water is very blue! Everything directly illuminated by the sun is white. This proves that the color balance of the photograph is correct and you are seeing real colors.

So answer the questions. Is blue an appropriate color for water, even in the Atlantic, under conditions of clear sunlight? Does the color of the water change the colors of objects in and around it? Does PE have these characteristics? And are these a reflection (literally) of reality?

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.... I rest my case.

the enemy's cheating with PE4. yup, on my way to Yokosuka for a photo recon and a DD found me. took some damage and had a looksee with the external cam and there's smoke coming from my boat while it rested on the bottom, 120', effecting repairs. nothing like a signal flare to mark your position. if there's gonna be another version, can this be fixed?

I can't say whether the new version looks better than the previous ones (wasn't able to play SH4 because of a low specs computer) but this one certainly rocks. I especially like the explosion effects on board ships when using the deck gun.

Hi Alex,
Thank you for the nice comment You can thank Nisgeis and Is4htl for the explosion effects

Look closer, RR. Especially just below the boat. Check out the ripples ... the side facing away from the sun. What do you see (hint: the water itself ... unmolested by reflected sunlight)?

The color? Green.

I think everyone can judge for themselves that I am correct. I've seen green water. I've seen bright turquoise water. I've seen water so colorless and clear that boats seem suspended 40' in the air. That's blue water in the photo. You can't pick out an infinitesimal detail and then claim the water is that color. You make people laugh at you.

That water certainly looks blue. My point is, the water, itself, might not be blue. The only way to tell the actual color of water is to look at it in an environment where light has little or no effect. Like, for example, watching it cascade down the inside of a conning tower.

Or examing the inside of a wave. The following link (no pop-ups or porno) takes you to a kazillion snapshots of surfers riding the waves.

http://www.surfing-waves.com/your_wave_pictures.htm

Notice how most of the shots show the surface of the water to be blue? The inside of many of the waves, though, are not blue. Very many of them are green. Nonetheless, if the only thing you looked at was the surface of the water, it would all look blue ... 'cause you'd never notice that "infinitesimal" green showing on the backside of ripples.

Maybe the true color of the water in your picture is blue. It really doesn't matter. At no time in SH4 have I seen water of any color come cascading down the hatch into my conning tower. And I've yet to see a mod where, as skipper, I can sail up to a sandy beach and go surfing. Ergo, I don't see where the color of virtual water is that important.

Yes Capt Shark, this is a bug in PE4. I will try to correct it and post a small patch to it. It's the colour of the fog in storm/rain at night which I accidently defined as green when working with the colours.
