So, I take it it's all eye candy then? It has no operational use with regards to it being an extra tool as a warning device.

Yes it is functional. Here it is:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=127815 and read the thread. The 1.4 version works with 1.5 too if you don't want to hex edit your 1.5. Use Notepad to edit your own menu.txt and commands.cfg files:

In Commands.cfg find [Cmd158]:
and edit it to look like this so Shift + X raises and lowers the SD:

[Cmd158]
Name=Toggle_snorkel
Ctxt=1
;Key0=0x59,,"Z"
Key0=0x58,sC,"Shift X"

Find the lines 4415 & 4416, and edit your Menu.txt to look like:
4415=Raising SD antenna!;Rising snorkel!
4416=Lowering SD antenna!;Lowering snorkel!

Use Anvarts Sensors_Sub_US.sim. Back up your files someplace safe. Might as well edit the "fire torpedo while accidentally bumping the Enter key" while you're at it.

In commands.cfg change these:

[Cmd6]
Name=Time_compr_normal
Ctxt=1,2,6,9
Key0=0x0D,,"Enter"

[Cmd313]
Name=Fire_torpedo
Ctxt=1
Key0=0x0D,c,"Ctl+Enter"

I prefer doing my own thing rather than the big super mods too. There are a lot of really cool small mods available.

Happy Hunting!

Art

Edit - (I almost forgot) - in commands.cfg edit [Cmd195]

[Cmd195]
Name=Snorkel_depth
Ctxt=1
Str=1033
Key0=0xBA,C,"Comma"

and in menu.txt change 1033:

1033=Radar depth;Snorkel depth

No it's not eye candy. It's raised when your still submerged to sweep for air contacts before committing to surface trim. Nothing worse than surfacing under a patrol where they have the drop on you, pun intended. As stated in the book passage, raise the SD and sweep for air contacts, come up to radar depth and sweep for SJ surface contacts, and then surface when clear. You may ask what's the point as air patrols can see you at P-depth? Most patrols only ran surfaced after dark and dusk and dawn were dangerous times to be surfaced. The above procedure would be used after dusk to maximize stealth and minimize risks.
