I had to look in a dictionary to make sure. The first definition of 'Icon' is a picture or representation, but the second definition, at least in The American Heritage Dictionary, is "An important and enduring symbol", and San Francisco at least is recognizably famous for being the center of the hippie movement in the '60s and is still considered to be a center of liberalism in America.

So, semantics aside, I think the original reference is valid.

Point ceded. While San Francisco may be an important and enduring symbol, I would have to ask what, exactly it symbolizes. I'm certain that if you asked 10 people that question you'd probably get 12 different answers and 10 out of 9 of them would be offensive to 3% of the registered iconoclasts

:rotfl:

I'd be offended but I have absolutely no idea what that means. Nor what percentage of which group that puts me in.

Oh crap, I've unintentionally started talking like a politician (while trying to make a bad joke). Shame on me:p

So unlike the Democrats unsubstantiated voter fraud claims in the 2000 election we're already seeing numerous verified voter fraud efforts by the Dems this year.

Maybe we're nearer the next civil war than I've previously thought...

I don't see a smiley after this statement, so I assume you're being serious?:rotfl:
He is, and i wouldn't call them brought to you by liberals. I think a more accurate statement is that they have been 'overtaken' by liberals, and none of them mentioned were at all built by a single liberal. They were conservative back then, much more so than our rightest right conservatives are today.

The only reason they are liberal today is the conservatives left these cities to the cesspool.

Uh oh, not this "back in the day" bullcrap again. Yeah yeah, back in the "old days" everyone was polite, no one raped, molested children, murdered or wrote bad checks. Politicians were 100% honest and everyone was ruff tough and hard to bluff.

I live in a blue state now. I grew up in a red state. I'll tell you what a cesspool is. Lynchburg VA, Pulaski VA, Bluefield WV or any place in West Virginia for that matter. Conservatives are nothing more than a bunch of overweight hold overs from a forgetten era. They sit around and join in the 1 hour "hate" with Bill O'Reilly. They blame all them "homos, blacks and perverted MTV dances" on their problems.

I was raised to think this way, but I found the people screwing me over and making sure my paycheck kept me poor were white bible beating republicans. They were the ones screwing me over, not the liberals I was bred to blame all my problems on.

OP: The US is a democracy. If the citizens of an area want to let non-citizens rule them, despite your oh-so-modern-and-reformed views on, well, everything, so be it. What are you afraid of, that if we allow those smelly foreigners (would you believe it, some of them have dark skin? Dark, I tell you, daaark!) to hold public office, eventually atheists will be allowed in, too:p?

Residing in Norway, I'd have nothing against a foreigner holding public office here. Why would I? The US might have changed since I lived there, but when I did it was a democracy, where people voted. Don't want someone to take the reins of your city, regardlessly of his political abilities, simply because he's not a citizen?

Vote for the other guy.

Quote:
Where in the article does it say that it's the "left" that made the proposal?
The left(n): People I disagree with, see also scapegoat. Example: "Someone proposed to let non-citizens hold office in the USA, must be commie leftists who hate Christ".

Quote:
recently, a Democratic operative pointed out that when Obama holds a rally 25-30,000 people show up, whereas when McCain holds one, he only draws 10-15,000.

The Republican spokesman replied, "That's because McCain's supporters are at work."
Hilarious in the sense that it forgets that it's the poor who works, hardest, often having to take more than one job to make ends meet.

Smear against politicians I can understand, but when right-wingers say we shouldn't vote for a candidate because his voters are lazy, that takes it all to a whole new level. It's like saying, "don't vote for Obama, or you're as dumb as these people".

Those damned Negroes couldn't vote, and neither could our child-factories, sorry, women, who also couldn't press charges for martial "rape". We could beat our kids with belts, we had nice, segregated neighborhoods and chools so we didn't have to see those damned darkies, and our teachers respected that Christianity should be taught to every student, even if it meant blatantly disregarding those little children's religions. Atheists, fags and race traitors partaking in intersexual relationships were beaten up on sight as they should be, and the rest of the world feared the might of the US Army, as commanded by Presidents who knew that the US should rule the world.

Then, liberals :sneers:.

Good post Safe-Keeper, I was feeling alone thinking I was the only liberal who liked submarines! Arnold Schwarzenegger has been a really good governor and he is from Austria.

The conservatives are in sad lot these days. Their time is over and it has been for while. Until they are able to clone Ronald Reagan they are pretty much screwed. The republicans vote their morality at the balot box, even though that isn't what voting is about. They vote against their own economic well being because they think they are sticking it to lazy welfare blacks.

The good news is the republicans got greedy under Bush. He took too much too fast and even the lowest citizen who doesn't think about politics feels the pain at the gas pumps. People have lost homes and buried their sons and daughters over the Vietraq war.

A conservative won't bat an eye when you tell them about the hundreds of thousands who are dead because of the Vietraq war, but they will fly into an emotion rage if you mention Clinton getting a blowjob.

Reminds me of the line from Fiddler On The Roof:

"It's not what it once was."

"I'll tell you a little secret, my friend. It never was 'what it once was'".

And you're right, of course.

And America has been going to hell in a handbasket for 200 years. Just ask anybody on the losing side of any election.
