To tell you the truth I had no idea the naval base is on the inside part of the gulf. I seriously thought it was where you put in in GWX. Probably it has to do with the fact that I've never been to this area althoug I've been living in Athens for 23 years

Sorry

@ geosub

You have PM

Now back to original question

Does anyone have the exact SH3 location for those guns to go ?
Dates would be good too

If I am gonna feck about playing with Salamis may as well add those guns
Plus any info on the Averof engagement with them and the Br retreat would be much appreciated
Could look and hunt myself but
Meh

For NAVARONE I have no idea as it is a fake story! Maybe you can place them in LEROS island:hmm: .
I will post some pictures of the island later. Several destroyers were sunk by airraids that period (autumn 1943)

AVEROF and KGV had an engagment in autumn 1944 during the reoccupation of Greece (GREEK Operation MANNA) against the Aegina batteries (see 4th post of this thread). I will certainly be able to find some info in some days (I told you why). The british retreat took place in April (From PIRAEUS to CRETE) and in the end of May (CRETE-ALEXANDRIA) 1941. Pretty heavy traffic!

Also true that if I played at 100% I'd probably never notice it. Well, the maps would still bother me, but that's my problem.

Jim, I never said anything before because I never looked at it until this year. That said, I agree that any changes of this type need to be placed in SH4, not SH3. I want to try some of that myself, if I ever get done with my other projects.
Rgr that Steve

Now reading on/catching up, it would appear BBW is going to initiate a fix (but not meant in the context that anything is broken)

Hi BBW, Jimbuna pointed out in post #2 that the Guns of Navarone is based on fact and is actually the island of Leros, correct me if I'm wrong Jim!:
Quote:
The island of Leros is part of the Dodecanese island group in the south-eastern Aegean Sea, which had been under Italian occupation since the Italo-Turkish War. During Italian rule, Leros, with its excellent deep-water port of Lakki (Porto-Lago), was transformed into a heavily fortified aeronautical base, "the Correquidor of the Mediterranean", as Mussolini boasted.
Edit: Gee 3 posts almost at the same time!! I think Geosub answered it but I'm stubborn & will leave mine in, so there!!

Now I can tell you about the real story of the Guns of Aegina.

These were two double 12'' and two double 8'' turrets taken from the battleship HS LEEMNOS ex USS IDAHO.
http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/i...000/h71046.jpg

The 12'' were transfered to the top of the hill at the Nort East Cape of the Island Aegina
which is in the middle of Saronikos bay, under Salamis http://earth.esa.int/ew/special_even...athens_map.gif

See their positions here:
http://www.fortifications.gr/images/sterea/1220_1.jpg

And even closer
http://www.fortifications.gr/images/sterea/1220_2.jpg

The 8'' turrets were transfered to the Souther West cape of the island
http://www.fortifications.gr/images/sterea/1221_3.jpg, together with 6'' guns.

During the landing operations in the islands of Milos and Aegina (11-14 Nov '44) these where bombed like that:

The 12'' batteries were bombed by HMS KGV (departure from ALEXANDRIA) and HMS AVEROF (departure from SALAMIS). Then as AVEROF's guns had reduced elevation, procedeed to the southern 8'' batteries and HMS KGV to the MILOS island for the next landing. There were some five destroyers together, an escort carrier, a light cruiser but for the moment I have no more info. I know where I can find but not know!
