[REQ] Guns of Navarone

Hi, just wondered if someone would do a "Guns of Navarone" mod, it was on the island of Navarone in the movie, don't know if this was an actual place or ficticious.
I think it would be kinda awesome, would have to give the guns a large range with a little oomph!

The story concerns the efforts of an Allied commando team to destroy a seemingly impregnable German fortress that threatens Allied naval ships in the Aegean Sea, and prevents over 1,200 isolated British troops from being rescued. The story is based on the real events surrounding the Battle of Leros in World War II.

That's good to know Jim, I thought the whole thing may have been fiction, that makes this project even better, now all we need is a volunteer!

There isn't any island called Navarone in Greece. However there is a gulf called Navarino where a famous naval battle took place in 1827. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Navarino.

Actually, there were two 12'' guns on top of the Aegina Island (http://www.greeka.com/saronic/aegina...map/aegina.gif) comming from the retired battleship HS LEEMNOS (http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/images/h46000/h46707.jpg) plus six 6'' guns around the eastern coast of the island, all of them guarding SARONICOS bay which were transfered there pre-war. They were bombed by HS AVEROF (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e5/Averof_Today2.jpg/800px-Averof_Today2.jpg) and HMS KGV in 1944.

Furthermore: I want to state from this thread that the Salamis Base is placed incorrectly in SH3! In the following picture: http://www.livius.org/a/battlefields...alamis_map.gif the Salamis base is located at the bay directly opposite of "Throne of Xerxis". NOT at the big WESTERN bay!!!! The water there is shallower than land!

I'm unsure if a map from 480 BC is actually a good reference for a WW2 question but IIRC GWX made a good and accurate correction of that :hmm:

The piece of the land on that map is of today! I will check again were Salamis Base is located in GWX and I will tell you. As long as I remember it is more or less in the same point as stock SH3 (western part of the isalnd) as it was in SH2 as well. If so it isn't correct. But again if it is at the eastern part were I located through the picture, then it is correct. I know very well where it is located in real life !

The duel between the Aegina batteries and KGV-AVEROF + 3 destroyers in 1944 would be a beatiful eyekandy!

If you research the Coastal Artillery used during WWII
you'll find that many of the BIG Guns were from scrapped out
ships.

Both sides re-used the Guns in this manor.

You are right, it is on the western part of the island in GWX as well, right where the town of Salamis is in real life.
To quote Lawrence Paterson: "The port lay in a bay on the island's eastern coast, directly opposite the town of Salamis to the west across the island's narrow waist. The port faced the Greek mainland and its town of Perama, separated by a narrow strait that led northward into the broad expanse of Eleusis Bay" (U-boats in the Mediterranean 1941-1944).

Tis an easy fix to move Salamis base

Harder to move all the shipping though
Quite a few variations out there on the GWX ones

Plus you will need new SH3commander files for start at sea
Plus your current career may throw you out off Africa first time as SH3 cannot find the old Salamis co ordinates

No we never touched Salamis
I did Penang which was on the wrong side and is again in SH4
No one mentioned Salamis before
Even though we had a Greek as a beta tester and another who did all the damage modelling\built the Averof

Meh
