Hmm. It's always been my understanding that the basis for the red, white and blue of the French flag was that of the United States, as the French tricolour was adopted for their revolution. That said, the original Stars and Stripes was actually thirteen stripes with the small Union Jack in the field, so our red, white and blue was taken directly from the British.
