I sank a 'neutral' with a Union Jack?

Hello there, my fellow captains. A strange thing happened last night. I'm a VIIC out of Brest and it's early January 1942. I was on my way back from AL25 when I met a large merchant and a Granville type freighter.

Sank the large merchant with two eels and the Granville with one... however, it showed up sank as neutral. It was a very dark night and I forgot to take a picture :damn:

But... I looked closely before it sank. Union Jack on a red flag. Now, no matter what else is on that flag... stars, couldn't make it out, emblem etc... Union Jack in 1942 = Commonwealth = the enemy. Right? Or am I about to feel very stupid :rotfl:

GoldenRivet 08-25-08 08:22 AM

when you say it showed neutral... was it a green sinking symbol???

Red Heat 08-25-08 08:26 AM

May be a Q-Ship? :hmm:

GoldenRivet 08-25-08 08:30 AM

but wouldnt a Q-ship show up as enemy? and dont you have to have the Q-ship mod installed for there to be Q-ships?

Red Heat 08-25-08 08:38 AM

Good question... :hmm:

Strange things can happen, yesterday I was attacked by a JU88A!! with German markings.

Gezoes 08-25-08 02:41 PM

The sank icon was grey :hmm:

It was definitely sailing together with the large merchant :hmm:

meduza 08-25-08 02:49 PM

The grey icon doesn't represent neutrals, green does. I'm not sure what the grey icon means, it seams pretty random to me.

Gezoes 08-25-08 02:53 PM

Ah, stupid me. It was the weather ofcourse. Nobody 'sank' it. It was rather wavy and windy.

I guess me hitting it as well with an eel and the flag drove me right through remember-what-a-grey-icon-means???-station  :rotfl:

Still, didn't know what a Q-ship was and now I do :)

grey symbols for sunken ships can have following reasons:
  1. the final blow was done by the ai (subs/planes/hit the shoreline/run over wracks in swallow water, bumping against harbor installations)
  2. it was drowned in heavy wheather
  3. caused by saving and reloading the game shortly before or after the sinking but its still possible that it will be credited in the log inspite its grey

Can also be grey for

a - Ship sinking out of viewing range but in sensor range ( can be while deep evasion or moving out of area )
b - Sinking a ship not identified by visual

NO renown is given for weather\AI sinkings
You will get renown if you sink it no matter whether grey or not

Yes and yes.

If it's a grey sunken ship icon, you weren't responsible for its demise....as you have already stated, it was probably the weather, but it could also be mines or air attack http://www.psionguild.org/forums/ima...ies/pirate.gif

@Gezoes

If your playing GWX2.1 you might want to give the Q Ship mod a go.

Tis always another way to end a promising career early.

The Granville type freighter is one of the ships that sinks too easily in bad weather. Try my sinking ship mod if you don't want the weather to steal your kills. ;) This mod slightly adjusts the mass/displacement ratio of nine ships, including the GTF, which tend to sink in poor weather.

Mod is GWX and JGSME friendly, and I have had no reports of it fouling up something else in SH3.

Unknown to me before! Thanks Jim. And if you didn't know before, your sense of humor is greatly appreciated on this little Dutch end of the pond :rotfl:

What manual? ;)

I once sunk a darken french ship in November, 1939 (that's before they surrender to Germany), and it is counted as a neutral, don't know why...
