The grey icon doesn't represent neutrals, green does. I'm not sure what the grey icon means, it seams pretty random to me.

Ah, stupid me. It was the weather ofcourse. Nobody 'sank' it. It was rather wavy and windy.

I guess me hitting it as well with an eel and the flag drove me right through remember-what-a-grey-icon-means???-station

grey symbols for sunken ships can have following reasons:

the final blow was done by the ai (subs/planes/hit the shoreline/run over wracks in swallow water, bumping against harbor installations)
it was drowned in heavy wheather
caused by saving and reloading the game shortly before or after the sinking but its still possible that it will be credited in the log inspite its grey

Can also be grey for

a - Ship sinking out of viewing range but in sensor range ( can be while deep evasion or moving out of area )
b - Sinking a ship not identified by visual

NO renown is given for weather\AI sinkings
You will get renown if you sink it no matter whether grey or not
