Were you submerged? It is likely you hit a mine.
I guess we can rule out the airplanes, since your position would be out of range this early in the war. What about that ship? Are you sure it was neutral? Once I hit "D" key instead of "S" while on high TC, which also caused almost instant death when I hit the bottom.
