Playing sh4 recently. On my way to the patrol zone - celebes sea - i sunk 3 merchant ships yarr!. I completed my objective by arriving at the patrol zone at the celebes sea, only to find a new objective "sink enemy merchant shipping" but i've already sunk stuff i thought ok no probs i'll just sink something else, i do exactly that i sink another ship and the objective remains incomplete!
Heres the question/s: How do i complete that objective. I seem to have completed it already. I'm low on torps + fuel already should i just return to base in fremantle will i still complete the patrol successfully if i do? Cheers in advance BTW just thought id mention i actually live about 20 minutes from fremantle in the city of Perth Western Australia, does anyone know anything about the history of American subs stationed in fremantle, the first i knew that they were even stationed here was when i played this game, knew they were in brisbane but my home port ha! how about that

Well, as far as I know you should just stay in the area and sink some more. That's what I do and the objective always get completed. I don't know if you fail the objective, but I think the "sink enemy merchant shipping" part is secondary to the first "deploy to" part. If so, you should be good. I'm sure someone else can give a more conclusive answer.

Sink more and it doesn't matter where you go to find them. For all intents and purposes, a sub commander shouldn't have to be told to sink ships, but it's there I guess to keep you from using the game just to heat up your house.

sinking shipping is independent of the deployment location. Sometimes they throw you into a target rich environment, other times they drop you in the middle of nowhere with *no* chance of finding shipping. I like to just kill the engines and give the boys a break if there's a specific time frame I have to stay there.
After the break, it's all business and I hit every shipping lane and interseciton within range. Palau has always been good to me, and I caught a Passenger liner coming from Japan once. I like the "free reign" part of it. I can refuel/rearm at will and ask for more orders if I need to.

If you are familiar with the Mission Editor, you can open some of these "Patrol Objectives" and look at how they are written and you will understand a bit more about it. Just look at the Objective requirements. A 'Patrol' they will give you an area (usually but not always 100mile radius) and that is the only objective. In a 'Sink' mission, you get an objective to get there, then they show you the second objective to sink a certain tonnage. So if you sink real small ships you may have to sink three but usually 2 will complete the objective. Peabody

my wife just started this game and is having trouble with her first mission. she left from manilla and arrived at her assigned star thingy. and was told to patrol east of the celebes sea. ok she did that and has been doin that now for almost 5 days straight and the objective still is not complete. she has sunk quite a few stuff and patrolled all the way to pearl and zig-zagged all over the eastern quadrant and all around the celebes sea itself and around the star on the map. still no joy in completing the objective.

How to complete a mission http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=111509
for the add folks like me... Patrol: Star with binoculars. Sail to the location, stay within the location within some range (I use 80nm) for at least 48 hours. Tonnage is irrelevant. Sink enemy shipping : Star with flag... Sail to location.. sink enemey MERCHANTS typically around 10 tons, literally anywhere on the map. You do not have to stay near the star. Location is irrelevant once the star is reached. Tonnage sunk before reaching the star will not count. Tonnage must be merchants, military vessels will not count. |

Otherwise, you're just burning gas to no particular purpose. You always have the discretion to go tearing off after some contact reported by other boats that might be passing nearby -- try it, it works -- but otherwise you need to remain on station for the required time. You may or may not be in a high-traffic shipping lane, but that's where you're ordered, so that's where you go. Dick O'Kane adopted the practice, when on station in an area that was not too "hot" in enemy air patrols, of simply letting the boat drift, rather than remain underway. While the motion of the boat took some getting used to, it conserved fuel and extentended Tang's time-on-station considerably. |
