Default IV not as good as III ?

I am a busy guy but - I got so emmersed in SHIII that I thought I would invest my time and start up the install/tweak/learning curve for SHIV.

With SHII and Grey Wolves this process went pretty smoothly and I was quickly happy with the game experience.

I'm actually having a harder time getting SHIV to run with good looking graphics etc... Also I'm not sure if I'm as happy with the interface and targeting tools.

Is it possible (I have read posts to this end..) that SHIV is not as complete or accomplished a simulation as III and that I should stop waisting my time?

I would appreciate any pro or con opinions on this before I give up or dig in deeper...

Please, dig deeper, the US Navy Submarine war against the Japanese is a complex and multi-dimensional story. There are many great books on the subject. SH4 has come a long way since its release and also deserves long study.

The Fleet Boat brought about technology to the war that is simply amazing for the time, if not for the torpedo problems its deadliness would have been ten-fold in tonnage.

So do a lot of reading, try out the mods there are many (more reading) and go on lots of patrols and see what you think of the Pacific. I did run SHIII for quite a time but now the Pacific has really put the hook into me...

Enjoy and Happy Hunting!

Nicely said Wilke

@ Udi Hrantebe: sure to also check out the link under Wilke's sig, it is a good one.
SH4 does have a different look, as it should, it is a different game. Also there is a wealth of other great information in older threads, the search option is your friend

Good luck with it

AND... this "comparison" has started more than one "heated discussion" so it's hard to say "yes or no" without potentially starting a ruckus...

Wasted Time?

Not in my book. I was deeply into the Atlantic in U-47 sailing 16 full missions on a very high level. This was all done in SH-III up to and including the GWX era. But i abandoned SH-III from SH-4's start off and have never looked back.

Because SH-4 is better - no

But because there simply is so much real reading stuff to get your self into and thus the imertion of being a skipper of one of the fleet boats are imo more easy.

I allso fancy the idea of having to seek out a single target along some very well known passages, islands etc. then continously attacking big convoys in the middle of the atlantic.

If we are talking realism as in targeting, tactics etc. i think both sims are on par, at least if you do it the "right" way.

...besides SH4 looks better graphically than SH3. The Environmental Mods made it even better looking. SH3 was a great sub sim for its time but has become outdated.

There can be no comparison. SH3 has had years to be surgically improved, yet SH4 is only a baby. A very mature baby, though, and getting better every day. Personally, I enjoy seeing it all grow up (and go through the growing pains). It's worth it to keep investigating and follow all the progress as it happens.

I think they are both awesome because let's face it, you either play submarine games or you don't. I play both. Sometimes in the same day. It depends on my mood. SH3 with GWX is amazing. SH4 is amazing.

I agree. I think the real "value" is in the modding community for both (no offense to the Ubi devs). GWX, TM, PE3, EE, RFB, RSRDC (to name just the bigger ones, there are LOTS more) really help make the sim.

By all means play the game you enjoy and avoid "waisting" your time. Waisting, by the way, is related to your diet and Ubi bears (I'm tempted to say "bares") no responsibility for that!:rotfl:

Any report that SHIII is an old worn-out game is premature. It retains its full appeal to this day. I hope SH4 ages as well.

SHIII or SHIV + Subsim.com = ''you cant go wrong, but you have to be patient sometimes before the game really start to get interesting thanks to the modders around here ''

Both, SHIII AND SH4.

It´s a hard decision every day. Should I rescue my fatherland from the bad Brits or should I protect Japan from getting all this nasty Chop Sui- or Babi-Pangpang Imports from China or and Philipines ?

Sh4 needs more time of work in some areas , for example bad weather and submarine motion in the waves is a lot better in sh3.

but i´m agree about the great potential of sh4 to be improved and become the new "SH3"
