Yup yup! Tis certainly that!

But you only hear that once it's actually slipping/slipped under the surface. Not when it's still fully afloat and merrily steaming still. I've lost count the number of times I've started to return for a second torpedo shot because 15 minutes has passed and the doggone thing is showing no signs of sinking, only to have the NO sing out, "She's going down!". And that's with me having been listening in on the hydrophones.

Oh, and if you want to hear a truly eerie and semi-hideous sound, listen by the hydrophone to the depth charges going off.
