Thanks, folks! Good to see everyone out here representing the Kreigsmarine. I'll be in the middle of moving, so I will sqeeze in Operation Juno where I can. I am 130 degrees to starboard of the convoy 14,000 kms away at 730 am. I will keep you all appraised how this goes.

Update on Operation Juno:
These are the results so far: ![]() June 5, about 9am, our boat is trailing the convoy on it's starboard side. We are within 12,000 meters on outside merchant but only 8,000 meters from a Hunt II DD. He turns towards us. I turn the boat 45 degrees to starboard, away from the convoy at all ahead flank, 17 knots. No matter, the Hunt is coming on at 27 knots. We see a flash of orange fire and hear the whine of shells overhead. I order a crash dive to 160 meters. At 100 meters I order rig for silent running at 2 knots. I hear one ping. The ping doesnt bounce off us. We go to 130 meters when the first depth charges start exploding. They are close but set to explode too shallow. He keeps making passes over the pot we vacated, he has lost us. 30 minutes later, his engine revs up and he rejoins the convoy. I go to periscope depth, he is well away. We surface, this time keeping more distance from the convoy, and going to ahead flank at 17 knots. Once, the lead Hunt II is 260 to our portside, i kick the engine back to ahead full, at 14 knots. We gradually make 15 degree turns to port and closer to convoy, now that we are ahead of the lead escort. I make sure to be at least 10,000 meters away from him. I take range, angle, and aob of the nearest portside target, and set ,my approach to be 90 degrees aob and within 500 meters of him. I drop to periscope depth, silent running. Once the lead Hunt II passes 35 degrees to starboard the first merchant, a troopship, is 353 degrees, 7 degrees off my portside. I let him pass. What comes next is a tanker at 1,900 meters and a troopship at 700 meters. I fire a T1 torpedo at the tanker , set to impact and High speed. I lower the scope, switch to a tube with a T2 torpedo. I take aim at the Troopship, when I hear the whine of shells and bullets. I see water kicked up near the periscope. I aim at the fuel bunker and fire. I lower the scope, and order a crash dive. I do not know if its a DD or if the troopships have deck guns. It looks like they do in the manual. I hear the boat rock and 'we're taking damage, sir!" I look on the crew screen, no damage. must have been superficial. I cut the engine back to silent running at 60 meters and coast down to 150 meters. All the while my boat is headed directly under the convoy. At 100 meters I hear a single ping. At 130 meters I hear depth charges behind me. I am tracking at least two DDs making passes over top but dropping the charges behind me. During different points of this, the soundman announces one sinking then the other. These happened almost 20 - 30 minutes after the torpedoes hit. I find that shots in the bow section of troopships sink them with one shot. My torpedo on the tanker was a little forward of the fuel bunker. It must have been enough to taker her down. Its an unexpected bonus. After 30-40 minutes I hear them stop, cut their engines on full and take off. Currently I am surfaced. I have passed a Tribal DD bringing up the rear guard. I am poised for a late afternoon attack. Oh, and by the way: HAPPY NEW YEAR! |
