Surely the diving too deep message could be linked to say 10-25 feet above whatever your current crush depth might be (if damaged) to allow you time to level off before instant death? I don't know much about modding, just my idea.

Yes, you are right. So the magic number we should all be looking for is probably 177.

No trick question. I got the creaking sounds to play when diving deep. But honestly I don't remember if those interior sounds already play in the game or not.
