That's about as QED as it gets.

I read O'Kane's book several times.. the last many years ago unfortunately. but it's funny how some of these things stick with you... more as an impression or "understanding" of what it should be, than as specific sources for reference.

Unfortunately, that doesn't carry many usenet or web board debates.

In perfect weather, 7 seconds is slow. In 6-foot seas washing over the deck, it's darned fast. The game doesn't know the difference.

Same thing: all the 'official' ROFs are determined under ideal conditions. A careful study of ALL available combat reports (including the Germans') revealed that the average in-combat rate of fire was one round every 20-25 seconds.

Even the Iowa's 16"/50 guns could do a couple of rounds per minute.
And battleships in combat had an on-target rate of about 7%. Destroyers and submarines, firing at much closer ranges, only averaged about 12% hits. They missed alot, which you never do if you fire the guns yourself.

But I agree, if it's taking two minutes something is wrong. Even Beery's much-complained-about ROF is only 23 seconds.

I haven't had much beef with the ROF for a deck gun (10-30 seconds, depending), but I have noticed that once in a while, the gun will start firing 'way off to the right. Sometimes 2-300 yards right, even though I'm aimed at the middle of the ship, and its within 1500 yards. Once this starts, it won't get fixed until I end my patrol.

Has my deck gun aimer taken a hit that I don't know about???
