I did several patrols out of Bergen in early 1943 until I was sunk by aircraft north of Iceland.
If you have metox, quickly estimate a bearing and course of the aircraft, then dive before they pick you up on their radar. Stay down for an hour or two, surface and repeat. The important thing is to recharge batteries and air before the next crash dive. Does not matter if you are surfaced day or night since they have radar, and they do fly at night. Pray for extremely bad weather. Does not make sense to fight it out with aircraft, eventually they're going to win. You may shoot down quite a few as I did but your hull begins to take minor damage as they begin to score some near misses. Then one aricraft you can't shoot down makes a perfect attack run straddling you with 4 bombs and it's all over. |
