A cross between DW and Harpoon? Only with nicer graphics?

But if we are to take Sage Neal's description of "action", that might not work. I wouldnt classify DW as an action game :p

Default What would you classify as a 'SUBsim'?

Personally, I think that a true subsim has to set the player aboard a Submarine for the majority of the sim. I've never played Destroyer Command, but from the title I'm guessing you're aboard a Destroyer atleast half the time, making it a Destroyer sim, not a SUBsim. Dangerous Waters is a Naval sim, not a Subsim. So, that should narrow it down a little, but I think Neal still refers to any game featuring a submarine, as a 'Subsim', bless his polyester socks.

As most people who voted in my poll will know, I would like to see a new Cold-War era Subsim, but I would be happy with any new dedicated Submarine simulation.

I hope there´s no sequel to this...

I loved this game... Good old Amiga! Yes, it was just a series of missions versus a campaign, and it may not have been 100% simulation material, but still - it was not an arcade game by any means. The graphics were awesome (for the time) - a true 3D world. It even had real 3D icebergs. It was way ahead of it's time. There are more screenshots here.

Anyway, not to stray from the topic, my money is on a new "Janes" EA simulation probably something 688(i) ish.

That game was way advanced over Gato. Gato I think was the first sub sim, but I could be wrong. 4 color graphics were phenomenol!

This was the first sub simulator for a personal computer. The graphics were very limited, CGA with stick figures for ships, of which there were five enemy types. Although it simulated Gato class subs, there were only four bow torpedo tubes available. All functions were generated by the keyboard (mouse? what's a mouse?). The mission area was very limited--a group of islands in the Pacific, which was subdivided into 20 "quadrants". You pressed the "M" key for new missions and they were transmitted by Morse code. You were instructed to keep in mind "the enemy may break Allied code at some point. Some messages may be enemy fakes designed to trap you." How's that for early efforts at realism? Resource management was one of the game's subtler features. Your primary strategic objective was to complete as many missions as possible with the supplies you carry before returning to the quadrant where your subtender waits.
Gato was the Pong of submarine simulations. When the first players encountered Gato, you can imagine they thought it was pretty significant. They had to start somewhere.

I believe you are right about GATO being the 1st sub sim. I totally forgot about that game. (CGA) graphics:rotfl: compared to what is out there now.

Maybe I'm grasping at straws here, but both DW and Fleet Command have alot of action in them. And DW is a subsim, but alot more too. I would agree that DW can't be termed as an "action" game. But a Fleet Command 2 fits the bill hopefully. We'll see........

I'm guessing ERT2, but hoping for a sequel to Subwar 2050. That was a very fun game, very different.

I'd wish for another Fleet Command .. or even numerous others.

My intuition tells me it's another Rising Tide, which would be the last choice on my long list.

I'm not getting my hopes up since the word "action" already popped out like an abortion on the end of a rusty clothes hanger.
