The only convoys I've met have been in column formation - often with the more valuable targets such as tankers in the centre column(s). There always seems to be one escort on point, zig-zagging to avoid presenting too easy a target and to maintain greater speed than the bulk of the convoy. ( all the better to come a-charging at your position, my dear.)

Other escorts tend to deploy on the flanks ( 1, or 2 each side depending on how many) and there's often a "sweeper" bringing up the rear.

On a few occasions a larger warship has been part of a convoy ( Dido Class cruiser etc). They tend to take up as central a position within the convoy as possible - I presume to protect themselves and to be able to use their big guns and greater AA capability to cover all the convoy.

Convoys are great to stalk and attack, but one slip and you're toast.
