Did'nt mean to run deep, I've been on the road.
As far as the recording goes the length really does'nt matter much (I have some custom responses that last 10 or 11 seconds). I can edit the length as needed.
The main thing to keep in mind is: Mic placement, try to avoid pops, hisses & any unwanted background noise (radio/air conditioning ...etc. Clarity of speech. Try to speak in a full voice. I can adjust volume as needed.

Thanks

:hmm: You know. . .that's a good point. That is actually where I got the idea for the mod, when Jurgen says "Silent speed" and the kid responds "Both main motors show 50 RPM". Does that translate over properly?

In my opinion "Schleichfahrt" is a typical uboat term like "anblasen" (blow balast tanks) or "Sehrohrtiefe" (periscope depth). "Leise Fahrt" won't do IMHO. To me as a German it simply doesn't sound right.

As was stated before there are some "Das Boot" sound mods that use a file with Prochnow and one of the guys in the Control room saying somthing like: "Schleichfahrt. Beide Schrauben kleine Fahrt, 50 Umdrehungen." which translates to "Silent running. Both screws ahead 50 rpm."

i told them... but he found it odd that Shleichfahrt was just 1 word. so i said "leise fehrt" will do then

From my point ov view there is a much easier way to solve this speedproblem.
With a little editing of the \data\submarine\NSS_Uboatxy\NSS_Uboatxy.cfg file you achive the same thing. Just a small change of the multiplier for AheadSlow and thats ist.
And you should be aware of the fact that SilentSpeed (i.e. Schleichfahrt) is an additional command, what historically meant, that everything that could possibly produce noise was turned off. Pumps, Electric Compass, no reloading of torps, nobody was allowed to talk, no farthing, etc.

In SH3 its not implemented in a very perfect way, because you can apply SilentSpeed with any boat speed, whereas it makes only sense with the slowest speed. Gaining higher speeds should automaticly turn off silent running.

On the other hand, selecting slowest speed should automatically toggle ON "Schleichfahrt". This can be done easily. In case you select the speed by keyboard, you can assign two functions to be executed with one keystroke. The keyboard interpretor includes some macro-functions and you can easily edit this using Setkeys http://rapidshare.com/files/21455294/SetKeys1_3.zip http://hp-h.com/p/cavalier88/

I have gathered some useful things, please feel free to go there and see if there is something you find useful.

P.S. "Schleichfahrt" covers the boat athmosphere much better than "Leise Fahrt"

I dont think so. If im on the surface leaving port i dont need whispering crew and silent running conditions. Same if maneuvering in position while submerged. And why should selecting a higher speed deactivate silent running? Avoiding depth charges with a higher speed, while you can go silent fast would be a situation where its not really necessary to automatically deactivate silent running.

Of course, only in submerged situations its of use to switch to Schleichfahrt.
Taxiing in the harbour, does not need Schleichfahrt at all.
Surfaced, and attacking during the night, the hydrophones should not detect the sub, because of their listening angle. (But the radar in late war does instead)

You are right, it is not necessary, to switch off schleichfahrt, trying to escape dc`s. Even the electric driven screws at higher speeds are loud enough and can be heard easily by the hydrophones of the destroyers from the hunter-killer-group.

I feel the same as poor sailor on this, I only use German sprechen but wish to know whereabouts in Scotland are your originations ?

Yes I tried this first, but you are, after all, still swapping one speed setting for another. I personally did not like losing any of my forward speeds. Since we spend 99.9% of our time going forward, and have all of those unused reverse speeds just sitting collecting dust. I would rather have a wider selection of known forward speeds at my finger tips. That's why I did it that way. A real U-boat telegraph had a wide variety of speed settings, both forward & reverse. It comes in pretty handy for docking also.

As far as the phrase, like I said above

If anyone can come up with an acceptable phrase within the SHIII voice files, just point me to the words to combine and I will edit & rename the files.
I guess we just need everyone to come to an agreement on what the proper phrase would have been in a U-boat. If "Schleichfahrt" is correct let me know. Since those sound files are already in SHIII it would just be a matter of renaming a few files.
