Damage Control

Can someone please tell me how I repair certain components like the deck gun or attack periscope. I have damaged items and for some reason they don't repair. I have the damage control team active but nothing happens.

This is very frustrating as this system SH4 employs is not very user friendly, and the manual is once again a waste of print

have you assigned sailors to the damage repair team?

The game doesnt seem to do it automatically.
When in port, i recruit a a whole team who is always assigned as damage controll.
And also, when in any kind of combat, go to battlestations, that activates the damage controll team.

3 possibilites

1. you do not have a damage crew assigned, or the crew assigned is not adequate enough to assess the damage.

2. silent running is enabled

3. you are underwater? and cannot repair the deck or flak guns.

And 4...

4. When surfaced, assign a gunner to the broken gun. He will fix the last 1%

Are you sure those items are damaged and not destroyed?

Exactly. Sometimes things are beyond repair at sea. Periscope is a common one.

The damage control team will repair everything if possible. All you can really do is change the order in which the systems get repaired.

Thanks for the replies. I think I had better be specific, so I have decided to post some screen shots. I hope you can get a better idea as to what is wrong.

Can someone tell me what is wrong with the components and give me a heads up to what the numbers and bars mean?
  1. How do I get properly trained dmage parties? Is there any skills I need to look for when in the crew management screen back at base (i.e. recruiting the right personnel)?
  2. Is it best to recruit a seperate repair crew that permenantly sits in the damage repair section?
  3. How do I change the repair priorities? Or can I?
The whole situation was fixed, and only fixed when I went in for a refit at Midway on my way home to Pearl.

Let me guess you either got ran over by a destroyer or a dive bomber got lucky.

Looks like those systems are wrecked (full red bar) the number is a percent of functionality I believe eg; 100 would be 100% or fully operational. Note it says repair time of 1 minute thats a bit misleading. The particular systems you show damaged are the usual suspects for 'beyond repair'.

You can give your sailors upgrades with specific skills when you return to home port. Also you can draft addittional sailors and put them in the empty slots of the DC team for faster repairs.

I also noticed the "leader" slot of your DC team was empty. Put your most skilled crewmember in that slot. That will improve effectiveness.

See the box called "Repair Team Priority" ? Drag the system you want to be repaired first into that box and it will move to the top of the list.

Thanks,

So that is why the periscopes could not be moved to the priority repair box because they were damaged beyond repair, and only a refit would solve that problem.

What are the best skills/abilities to look for when recruiting damage ccontrol teams? i.e. mechanic or electrical etc. skills

I see that you didn't activate the Damage Control Team. There's a button for that in the orders bar at the bottom of the screen.

Do note that the crew members inside a compartment will always try and repair damaged equipment in that compartment. So you should place at least one guy at the deck gun.

The damage control team can repair equipments in any compartment, one equipment at a time (the one on the top of the list in the subsystems screen).

They weren't up at all, the damage was caused by a near miss of a bomb dropped by an enemy plane.

I just wish these American subs would dive a bit quicker, I actually miss the crash dive timings of the German Type VIIC's

Hav ur decks awash just in case, but it will waste alota fuel, deck awashing will cutdown ur dive time, or u can tweak the dive time wit TT's tweaker.
