The problem isn't just the speed. In real life water can leak in, creating negative bouyancy. They tried to trim for positive to counteract it. The problem is that you never run at 1 or 2 knots unless you're 'silent running', which means NO PUMPS. Pumps make a lot of noise. NYGM's negative bouancy 'Anti-Hummingbird' mod is more realistic; not because it goes down instead of up (either at random would be nice), but because it keeps doing it - it doesn't stop after two or three meters.

Best of all was Aces Of the Deep's 'silent running' mode: after a while you would start to sink, and the Chief would say "Impossible to maintain depth unless we turn the pumps on", at which point you had to either sink or secure from silent running.

Yes, commander edition also includes a buoiancy gauge with the water level in the bilge

In a perfect world SH3 would allow us a means of controlling variable bouyancy. It does not.

Using the "reduced positive bouyancy" optional mod in GWX will allow you to achieve your desired depth as long as you have set a speed of at least 2kts.
Again, reduced positive bouyancy will become default in GWX v1.04. Using a lesser speed may result in acheiving less than your desired depth.

Removing positive bouyancy altogether would destroy the improved surface effects / interaction. (Surfaced U-boat behavior in GWX is more realistic than NYGM's surface dynamics IMHO.)

Using either mod, the player has to learn to live with minor quirks as a result of modding. In more than one way, SH3 doesn't give you enough string to tie your shoes properly. Adapt and overcome guys.

Report the matter to Herr Flick of the gestapo at once.

"The zeeboots?" Herr Flick locked his steely gaze on the RK on my neck.
"ja, my zeeboots are not SH3 or GWX issue bootz. They are real zeebootz with no laces."
Herr Flick's steel rimmed glasses began to fog. "You are a trouble maker."
"Over zeeboots?"
"Ja, zeeboots."
"Zeeboots, zeeboots?
"Ja, everybody likes zeeboots:

Herr Flick: "You may kiss me."

vonSmallhausen: "Yes Herr Flick."

Herr Flick: "No NO! vonSmallhausen... I was speaking to Helga!"

vonSmallhausen: "You could have told me sooner!"

Herr Flick: "That was thoroughly disgusting!"

Yep! I totally agree with you.
With Aces of the Deep I had the most thrilling u-boat hours of my life.
Too bad it doesn't run on my system anymore.

It's a pity that you can't mod SH3 that way...

dosbox will run AOTD on XP and probably vista. I also have gotten CAOTD running on an xp system although if i remember right it requires a sound patch, and a little finagling with compatability modes. a small amount of googling can turn up the needed software. Dunno if you run windows but i thought this might help.

Thanks!

I run XP with SP2 but couldn't get it started.

Now I'll give it another try.
