I haven't done careers this way but some patrols. I don't do it all the time but sometimes it's fun. You pick up a lot of contacts.

@Flakmonkey:
I can picture it: you reading a big novel about torpedoes or something for two days, feet on your desk, then suddenly: "SCHIFF GESICHTETT!" You're so surprised you throw your book in the air and literally dive to your computer :rotfl: But I have to admit, this is the best way to simulate the life of those crewmen. Doing all kinds of things to escape the boring days, then suddenly action all over the place. I admire you and I envy you ![]() |

Sometime I would like to try a real time patrol. But then I'll probably set SH3Cmdr to set 0x TC when a contact is spotted (to awoid getting rammed when I'm at the store resupplying). And of course I'll get myself some wireless headphones to simulate the crew yelling at me from another part of the boat.

I play a modified "real time" method based on my wifes mood. I'll use TC to get to and from my hunting area and TC1 while patroling/attacking. Once I'm on TC1, I'll leave the PC, cleanup the kitchen, act interested in what's on TV and keep checking back for contact updates.
Works well. |

Seeing as how 90% of the time between battles is absolute boredom in the simulator, I can't see how this would add anything to the realism of the simulation.
Other than the boredom factor, sitting at your computer for days on end watching a man on the monitor do a pole dance and watching a dot on the map crawl along in no way compares to life aboard a U-boat, and it certainly isn't entertaining, if you are playing the simulation for entertainment's sake. The only reason why the "long" missions are valuable at all, even with TC, is it gives you a sense of "stake" in the game. It is, after all, a lot of trouble to invest even a few hours in a patrol and thus you are "vested" in your mission and feel a real sense of loss when you die. If you could instantly jump from confrontation to confrontation the game would feel like single scenario missions and you would lose this sense of being vested. I think the game strikes a good balanace even with the TC. |

I can't imagine a real time whole patrol but I exactly know what you feel. 1xTC is a totally different game. Today I've spent the whole day reading stuff about celestial navigation and trying to get my boat to the patrol point. I don't use TC more than 256 and travel times are long enough. But considering manual navigation and target finding without any indicators on map I need 1xTC. So most of the juice is real time.
OK got to change course in 3 minutes, I'm trying to find that small island SW of Lerwick as my orientation point... yeah am lost ![]() |

Hey Hadrys,
You beat me to it. While reading this thread I was going to bring up manual naviation. You are right, a 1xTC patrol is tailor made for setting your own course and using the sun/stars for navigation. It also brings about good use of the depth finding equipment at the nav. officer's station when the weather turns bad. That will definitely give you things to do in between contacts while running a real time patrol. One other benefit of a real time patrol is that you have a better chance of locating an enemy on your own since more sound check dives are done to break the monotony of the surface run. |

PS Do you have any idea of celestial nav? I was trying it the whole day without any success. I don't get that longitude part at all... |

It's a simulated sextant reading by performing a CTRL-left mouse click on the map's compase rose. That provides a spot to mark on the map what lat/lon readings you have. Since the .tga file for your sub is made transparent it doesn't show up anymore and the markings are used. I end up making all kinds of notations on the map during patrols to be ready in case the weather turns bad and I no longer am able to measure angles at sunrise/sunset.
Just like the satisfaction of a manual TDC hit on a ship, being able to reach a specific area or intercept a radio contact in the North Atlantic during bad weather is a great feeling too. |

BTW I was off that small island just 5 km NE. I was going to give it up searching and head NE for Lerwic but now I know I would make it. Quite nice as for the first time! Ok, I've made some tidying to the RealNav files to use it with GWX without problems and now let's try some celestial nav... only when the weather gets better. |

Are you saying that the stars shown in the sky at night are actually astronomically accurate? I always wondered about that. I wonder if the phases of the moon are accurate, too?
