Default GWX - too many targets? And other Questions

I installed GWX a couple days ago, and like others, I've gotten back into SHIII thanks to it. Great job!

I'm finishing up my 1st patrol. Couple questions I have (it's Sept, 1939):

1) It seems DD's can spot me from pretty far out. I get an alert, immediately go to periscope depth, turn 90 degrees, and for the next 2 hours have a DD over my head.

2) I'm running into targets of opportunity every couple of hours. Granted, my patrol took me around the British isles, but I didn't expect to have so many ships. Do the stragglers disappear after a few months, reflecting the increased use of convoys?

1.

periscope depth? Go deeper! run 2 knots silent rig, and change course frequently. I shake them off very easy by just going to 60 - 70 meters.

2.

in the begin of war, there is a lot of traffic going around the british Island, thought I found myself on a lane where 2 or 3 times a day a C3 or C2 came to pass....that was just turkey shooting but heck needed to tonnage. I dont know it for sure but around the British isles there is always traffic going on. you just have to be lucky and dive to periscope depth to check with the hydro.
also be adviced grid AM50 - 56 near the Ireland is a HOTSPOT for early war tonnage as there are a lot of lonely ships and convoys that pass that point.

Traffic will vary. Sometimes you can sit on a known hotspot for weeks and see or hear nothing.

I'm finishing up my 1st patrol. Couple questions I have (it's Sept, 1939):

1) Your speed and relative angle to the DD's can make you a huge target or a tiny one. When I switched from Stock to GWX, I learnt quickly to always run deep and only go to periscope depth when checking things out. Running Ahead Flank while submerged is painting a bullseye on yourself.

2)Lucky you. I am in about late November 1939 and I have gone all the way to free down and only encountered 3 convoys and a few loners. Plenty of warships about though!
