Default Deck gun crew target neutrals on their own accord?

Today I experienced some weird behaviour, my deck gun crew targeted a lone merchant on their own accord (I only pressed the fire at will button, I didn't specificaly target the ship via the binoculars), only to later find out that it was a neutral merchant.

This is not normal behaviour for SHIII.... is this a GWX "feature"? or was it a random bug?

I dunno, but i know if you give the flak gun crew "fire at willl" they'll shoot down friendly planes as well.

Not a Bug I guess

its the Kaleun who gives the order ''Fire At will'' so they will shoot any target in the area.

must be SH3 , because I guess the fire at will feature will respond onto any confirmed contact in the area.

tot test it out
start in a harbour and just press the fire at will button see if the Deck Gun crew start to shoot at the ships in the area thought they are friendly or Neutral (you can find some neutrals in the harbour) if the Deck gun crew start to shoot at friendly and neutrals then its clear the it responds to any contact and shoots at it.

I'll test it as you suggest next time that I'm in harbour. I do know that in stock SHIII this sort of thing didn't happen (at least it never happened to me), and was actualy a cheap way of identifying a contact as friend or foe (which may be a reason why GWX changed this?)

... results tomorrow

I have try it in GW1.1a and in GWX. Unfortunatelly when you give the order to your gun crews to "Fire at Will" or even to "Engage Closer Target" they can't seem to distinguish between neutral and enemy targets. That's why I always fire manually in the presence of neutral targets (ooops soory I meant shipping )

Well, it's official. If you give the "Fire at will" command in GWX the gun crews will open up on anything that they see, even on neutral and FRIENDLY targets. So for those who have experienced this kind of "friendly fire" while playing multiplayer, now you know that it's not a multiplayer issue, its a GWX issue.

I confirmed this by sitting in port at the beginning of the mission and giving the command "fire at will". The gun crew oppened up on my escort.

This seems to be an unfortunate side effect of GWX, since I don't recall this behaviour in stock SH3.

I guess this "friendly fire" bug is most troublesome on the flak gunners. I used to always have them at "fire at will" status so that they could immediatly open up on any enemy planes that they spoted (when you get surprised by an air attack you don't have much time to fool around with stuff like personaly telling them to defend themselves and start shooting back ), but now, I guess I'll have to keep everybody on a short leash and tell them on a case by case basis wether they can shoot or not... this may have a detrimental effect on my chances for survival

P.S.: By the way, "fire at will" is not supposed to mean that you must fire, but rather that the gunners have free will in deciding wether they should shoot or not.

It was in the stock game as well. I think the gun crews were just following the BdU directive "Be more arggesive!"

I shot up a French ship on the grounds they were zig zagging they must have been giving supplies to the enemy, March41.

And anyway it's only the French.
