Default Sub AI

I've played a couple of missions included in GWX that have wolf packs. The other subs are as dumb as a rock! They'll fire AA and deck guns on other ships only to stay surfaced the entire time until destroyed.

Are there any fixes for the AI?

I recon that wolfpack you've encountered was drunk as a skunk! Did this happen at the equator by any chance?

P.s. Sorry, couldn't resist.

Perhaps could be better that IA subs stay dived during attack , if not they are a sitting duck.

wolpacks are nice for inmersion but it takes away the surprise factor in your attack. the convoy is in high alert could be difficult do the first aproach undetected.

The AI subs are either surafced or submerged
They cant do both

Submerged they do nothing
Surfaced they fire

AI torpedo work still continues
Until then

I didn't know the AI subs were sometimes submerged. I thought they were only surfaced. Even if they can't do both that's kinda cool!

Scary that so many wartime u-boats (except those couple) had uneven balance of surfacings to dives. The eternal submerge karma, i guess...

A couple of times I have spotted U-Boats around convoys cruising at periscope depth with their scopes out the water totally unmolested whilst i am pinged and DC'ed at 200m and silent.

I think I'm been picked on!

Maybe it's all those torpedoes you've stuck into their backsides that's making them grumpy . . .

Dont all player subs work as AI subs if you dont select
human playable in Mission Ed,?
I havent looked at it close but I couldnt see the point
of the option without it.

Nope
If you add a player sub into the game as a general scripted unit you will end up with all sorts of problems with your boat conflicting and can even CTD

I still cant get over the fact that dispite how great SH3 was and SHIV will be, the devs just couldnt manage to script some basic AI patterns for submarines... In a submarine simulator of all things. Im no programmer, but if we strip a submarines desired behavior down to its bare bones, it would be simple case of.

Sub detects enermy ship = sub dives to 15 meters
Sub loses contact with ship = sub surfaces
When ship is within 1.5.km + between 350-10 degrees of bow = shoot torpeedo.

Wow - that piece of rocket science is not full submarine AI by a long shot, but it would be a vast improvement over what SH3 and 4 currently have in place.... which is of course NOTHING.
