I wrote Buchheim about two years ago and his health was in a slow decline at that time.

In memory of L-G Buchheim...Fair winds and following seas...

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condem.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.

Lest We Forget.

Especially where subs are concerned, Das Boot is the best book/depiction ever.

Not only a crazy story, but true and perfect for youngsters..

So they may realize that what was not so long ago.

May his seas be calm.

What does it say on the box in their picture?

The British release says "The Miniseries", but I think it's the same. I don't think you can buy the series with all the opening and closing credits, but the uncut movie version is just that: the series but as one whole instead of six episodes.

He didnt leave without some controversy concerning his exploits on a U boat however....it seems some in the U boat community think he has embellished a bit on his personal experiences....whatever the case....I for one have enjoyed his books and the subsequent movie many times over ........RIP......

This reminds me when I was looking at online biographies of u-boat captains. Every now and then, I'd come across one w/out a death date, which implied the guy was still alive. I thought there was at least one top ten u-boat ace still alive, for example.

Yes, there's a book! Don't know, if it comes in an english version, maybe! But I have it in the german version, so if you want that one, you can go to your book store with this info:

Lothar-Günther Buchheim
Das Boot
1973 Piper Verlag GmbH, München
ISBN 3-492-22000-2

Personally, I started reading in it last summer, I takes it down to read further now and then, I'm at page 120 now. It's 597 pages, so it takes some time to read. But as always: the book contains much more than a movie (or a tv-serie)!
