For those of you living/visiting New England this summer:
April 1945 The U-853 was the last German submarine that sank in American waters, and it happened in 1945 just off the coast of Block Island, where it still rests. The U-853 sank two known American ships; The USS Eagle 56 and the USS Black Point. http://www.aiipowmia.com/inter24/in040703mystery.html Newport RI Her propellers have been on the Inn at Castle Hill property since 1953 and are on display. |
