Rough seas and having problems ventilating are real, no plane operator can keep the snorkel from shutting. The mast is designed to shut, and it happens all the time. Sonar 732 talks about ear popping, run the diesel in heavy seas and you will not only pop your ears but get a real whiff of diesel smoke, I have even seen, and I know others have had a low vacuum shut down on the diesel, now that will pop your ears.
Bill is totally correct this is real and if we strive for realism in these sims then dunking the mast has to be there. The same thing happens to the scope it can become impossible to get more than a glimpse in heavy seas.
I was always amazed how the planes and helm could keep from broaching in heavy seas. A submarine rides like a pig in heavy seas near the surface, but when we're are wallowing all over the ocean, just think about the people on an FFG, at least we can go deep and get out of it.

Roger that. As Diving Officer, the two phrases I dreaded hearing from the OOD when at PD were, "Diving Officer, I can't see" and "Diving Officer, we're flying!"

Another question is, why do we lose HP air? I thought modern torpedo launchers recycled the HP air?

From what I understand, air pushes turbine and turbine pushes water... not sure if the air actually "escapes" or not...:hmm:

I wish there was a way to change the 80% start to 100% percent, but it would seem that its embedded in the .exe or .dll files

The air used is then vented BACK into the pressure hull. Otherwise it would make a heck of a lot of noise as it floats to the surface and expands. Sooo.. as air is vented inboard, the pressure in the boat increases. You perform an air charge to lower pressure in the boat. You will reach a high pressure limit in the pressure hull before you reach a air main low pressure conditon requiring an air charge.

I never understood the need to ventilate to do an air charge. The compressors are in the pressure hull and it is a closed system. You have to do them periodically due to the numerous air leaks thougthout the boat.

Actually, you can do a charge, but only for about 10% of the volume. I guess they didn't want you to be able to blow to 30% and then fully recharge your bank submerged when the pressure isn't there anymore.

One of the funnest things I EVER heard at PD...

One.. Two.. Three.. Four... Five... Six... Seven... ( mind you.. this is a slow and steady count)

Thank you Dive, blade check sat, they are still there. Now can you turn this helicopter back into a sub?
