Locations were actualy set with 4 digits. They work like a numerical keyboard. with 1, 3, 7 and 9 in corners etc. First you find AL then find 6 (middle right) then divide that square up in 9 fields like the keypad - now find 2 (top middle) devide that place up again in 9 fields - now find 3 (top right) and again for 3. It actualy gets a pretty close location.

As you can see on the krigsmarine karte 1870 G - the square AL62 is about 0,8 x 0,8 degree's (roughly 50x60 miles) - the two aditional digits gives 0,09 degree accuracy for a location or roughly 10 times more precise (5 x 6 miles)

DISCLAMER - above calculations were done using headmath and rough numbers - longitudal and latitudal lenght depends on place on earth.

First of all- Yes, I am using GWX.
Thanks guys, it makes sense now, but are these radio messages really just fake, eye-candy? No convoy is really there?

Sorry but it's true.
I too spent many a fruitless day running an intercept based on one of these fictional messages. Someone here had the right idea in saying that you should treat them as English counter-intelligence messages designed to send you on a wild goose-chase. Remember if it doesn't come via ENIGMA, it's a TRAP!!!

Radio messages are eye candy but radio contact reports are real.

Confusing me even more....
I'm thinking that will make more sense once I get in-game.
(Distinguish between radio MESSAGES and radio CONTACT REPORTS)

A radio message is just that, you will hear the morse code signifying its' arrival. A radio contact will appear as a ship or convoy somewhere on the map. Note the time, speed and direction by clicking on the icon, and plan your intercept course accordingly.

So the message that I received - addressed to my U-boat - which said:

"SSS . . . 52.11N, 01.43E, SS MAGDAPUR"

is nothing more than English trickery? That explains why it came in on an open frequency.
