I used to break the surface, let the DD see me, then i would go to PD line up a stern shot wait till he gets with in 500m then fire a magnetic, .5m below his keel and watch him go bye bye
However now with GWX lets just say i had to change my tactics but i still go for the Escorts to leave the convoy all for me Muwahahaha :rotfl:

I took on two DD last patrol for the first time, usually i'll dive but i was so close to the convoy i knew if i dived it would be a while before i can come up and try to attack - they would of kept me down for hrs. So I decided to take them on both were coming for me about 1500yrds distance one on the left other on the right and the convoy straight ahead dead centre in the middle, bernard was freaking he thought i was mad taking on two DD's so i sent him to make me a coffee The DD's were zigzaging, instead of doing a down the throat shot which is practically impossible when they zigzag, i let them both cruise past me so they were both 90degrees on either side then i fired my torps and dived to 50 feet at flank speed to get the boat down quick just in case i missed. Heard two explosions went to persicope and saw I had hit both of them, yet they never sunk just kept travelling in wide circles but never dropped any depth charges, then they both went away. Its like they weren't interested in sinking me after that, they never sunk but instead kept there distance from me? I had the convoy to myself for approximatley 15min before another dd from the far side of the convoy started heading my way. Sunk 1 large tanker and 2 C2's then retreated.

Default I agree !!

DD are a waste of time ! it would be easier if the convoys didnt have them .. On one patrol I was able to eliminate all 3 And I had the convoy all to myself . that means being above surface and not having to worry about those little tommys comming after me . I was lucky . I only used 3 torps and sunk all three . This was after 5 hours of the game . I was about 12000 meters away after it was all said and done . the convoy had 3 tankers . I like tankers for the tonnage . I dont know how to expalin the tattics od how . I would love to write them down and expalin how it was done . the importnat thing is not to allow the des to get in front of you , only if you cripple them , Than use the bow torps . I will try to make a movie on how I have done it . My utmost respect for all the seasond Kaluens Hers the link as to why I use 68 . its named after the famous 68sentai . I was the CO of virtual 68sentai for 5 years in cfs2 and Il2 .. take a look

I leave 'em alone unless I'm caught at PD with one of the buggers charging at me. Eels are for bigger game!

I always rely on the "no collision" thingy when surrounded by DD's. I stay submerged, and watch the hydrophone bearings closely, then i try to maneuver so that the DD's comes on a collision course with each other. This gives me some time to change course and maybe sneak away, while they are busy reversing..

Without going into to much detail, i attacked two different convoys and got chased away both times
Both convoys escaped
Made to go deep and run silent....ping, ping

You are not a newbie SHIII player, pants, so considering your extencive gaming experience & the fact that you got chased away says all about this great mod! Honestly, this sounds EXCELLENT! I love it when it gets more realistic!

I just got off patrol and I attacked a convoy. A destroyer was heading to ram me at exactly 180 degrees behind me. I launched a G7a and prayed and...it hit! Sunk it with one torpedo. Then his brother chased me down and killed me but it was awesome!

Late 42 onwards with the Allies new ASW...prepare to enter the killing fields
Naval and airforces work together to cut short your patrol
The surface is not your friend always keep an eye in the sky, DD's will work together to hunt you down, they wont give up easy.
Not saying it is impossible..You just need to Think about your target, and a plan to escape after..It all comes down to tactics
One good thing is there is a scale of difficulty, so you arn't thrown into the deep end .

Why make the game nigh-impossible? I thought the problem with the stock DDs was that they were TOO good; that they were better at finding you than they were historically. Ditto for the depth charges being way too strong.
