Default Killing Destroyers !!!

After many patrols I have seen how destroyers React too your presence .

I think that it is important too have your batterys charged to full when engaging a destroyer . Also It is very important to have your sonor man call out the contact , sometimes he gets lazy and quits . so thats a good time to get him back on track . Usaully when A des has made a dept charge run , he goes at least 45 degrees from your bow postion . And thats when its important not to change your heading . I have seen many turn left and swing around with a angle on the bow of 145 . at that time its a good time to chart while using a periscope depth .

Time is on your side , using the TDC chart and listinnig to the report ill adjust slightly and make small corrections . When the contatc is about 500 meters from your bow . Ill take the shot . Bingo sometimes it misses . when a des is on a attack and pinging Ill relese decoys , This throws them off and whil your sailing on the same heading you will see him off on a father direction . when that is true line up shot . BOOM DEAD des ,

Dont be afraid of the des , when In shallow waters . 25 meters works well , because the des sets his charges to a lower depth but those will explode hitting the bottom . . Its a cat and mouse game but you will control the situation if you stay cool . 11 des dead after the 8th patrol . NOT Scared , But Inconvinced . I had killed 3 destoyers in one sortie and had the convoy all to myself . I sank a tanker and a cargo ship on that patrol ,, BONSAI !!!

Yes, I agree it is a cat and mouse game, but then?

I shallow waters I must try my best to kill the destroy first before it finds you. Once it finds you, you are DOOMED and prepare to go to hell /heaven . Well, what I do is to attact it to come close to me from the bow / stern side. Then, when it is 500m away from me, I set and launch 2 torpedoes with appox. 4.25m as a running depth with magnetic detonators on. The destroyer usuall try to follow your course so you cannot hear them clearly through hypophone and let you run into their following charges, so you will face its bow side, which has a sharp surface and not suitable for impact detonators. Let themself run into the traps. They usually get killed when the fish explodes under their keel and they are not fast enough to change course (they need a reaction time!) even they knew two fish is running straight to it. Get meant.

If I want to save fish for later attack, just lower your periscope, rig for silent running and sneak away

if you have approached a convoy right. you will probably have the lead escort coming very close to you run silent sometimes stationary.his sonar will not yet be active. as he is not aware of you. let him get as close as you dare. say 800 mtrs. and fire. he will not get much chance to get out of the way of your torpedo.this will then give you the chance to get at the lead ships of the convoy. and get the hell out of it before the other escorts arrive on the scene. a few times i have let the lead escort go by me untouched and regretted it. as he will be the closest escort to you when the first ship gets hit.admittedly this only works if you manage to get ahead of a convoy and just wait for it to come to you.(my favourite way of attacking a convoy). sometimes you may have only disabled and slowed a ship down. just creep behind the convoy. untill it sails on. the escorts will leave the crippled ship and carry on with the convoy. giving you the chance to send it to the bottom without escort inteference.

In GW in particular he may hear your eels approach...and if he does, just watch how fast he can accelerate (like a greyhound after a rabbit)

In GW i dont even bother taking on a destroyer, i dive instead! In the stock game they use to be easy to take out, but now when i see one zigzagging towards me I dive deep!

I much prefer to save my precious torpedoes for big fat merchant ships... The best destroyer is the one who never knew you were there.

Default Don't

Orders and realism dictate that you should avoid fighting with destroyers. The subs were instructed and expected to sink merchant shipping to deny Britain her supplies.

I would only take on a DD if I were damaged and facing one lone attacker. Even then, my chances of a hit are small. DD speed alone, not to mention their turning radius would cause misses.

I used to break the surface, let the DD see me, then i would go to PD line up a stern shot wait till he gets with in 500m then fire a magnetic, .5m below his keel and watch him go bye bye
However now with GWX lets just say i had to change my tactics but i still go for the Escorts to leave the convoy all for me Muwahahaha :rotfl:

I took on two DD last patrol for the first time, usually i'll dive but i was so close to the convoy i knew if i dived it would be a while before i can come up and try to attack - they would of kept me down for hrs. So I decided to take them on both were coming for me about 1500yrds distance one on the left other on the right and the convoy straight ahead dead centre in the middle, bernard was freaking he thought i was mad taking on two DD's so i sent him to make me a coffee The DD's were zigzaging, instead of doing a down the throat shot which is practically impossible when they zigzag, i let them both cruise past me so they were both 90degrees on either side then i fired my torps and dived to 50 feet at flank speed to get the boat down quick just in case i missed. Heard two explosions went to persicope and saw I had hit both of them, yet they never sunk just kept travelling in wide circles but never dropped any depth charges, then they both went away. Its like they weren't interested in sinking me after that, they never sunk but instead kept there distance from me? I had the convoy to myself for approximatley 15min before another dd from the far side of the convoy started heading my way. Sunk 1 large tanker and 2 C2's then retreated.

Default I agree !!

DD are a waste of time ! it would be easier if the convoys didnt have them .. On one patrol I was able to eliminate all 3 And I had the convoy all to myself . that means being above surface and not having to worry about those little tommys comming after me . I was lucky . I only used 3 torps and sunk all three . This was after 5 hours of the game . I was about 12000 meters away after it was all said and done . the convoy had 3 tankers . I like tankers for the tonnage . I dont know how to expalin the tattics od how . I would love to write them down and expalin how it was done . the importnat thing is not to allow the des to get in front of you , only if you cripple them , Than use the bow torps . I will try to make a movie on how I have done it . My utmost respect for all the seasond Kaluens Hers the link as to why I use 68 . its named after the famous 68sentai . I was the CO of virtual 68sentai for 5 years in cfs2 and Il2 .. take a look
