Default Almost 1 hr to sink a ship

I'm on my second patrol using TGW1.1a. Never saw a ship on the first patrol. A ship is spotted and I get the choices (you know the screen) so I dive to periscope depth (this is at 0400 hrs). Up periscope and after looking for quite a while I finally get locked onto the ship (using 10x).

While I'm on the subject of the periscope, in the normal SH3 in using the periscope and press the tab key, it brings the ship much closer; but when I press Tab key in TGW I get what looks like a "wall of something" . What is happening here?

Anyway, back to the ship. It's a SMALL merchant. Fire 1, impact; Fire 2, impact, (now it's only a small merchant - how many torpedoes do I have to put into it) anyway, Fire 3; impact. Still the ship doesn't sink and get the credit. So I surface and approach with the intension of using the deck gun. At about 800 m I start the deck gun. I must have fired over 100 rounds.

I took a look at how many shells I had left, and went to external camers 'cause I wanted a picture of the burning ship and as I'm switching back to deck gun. I just happen to see the words "She's going down".

How come it's so different to sink a ship using TGW? If I have to wait for a half hour for my ship to sink so I get the credit in my diary for it, it doesn't make sense.

Edit: Looked at my notes. 0457 went to periscope depth. 0554 "she's going down"
