Almost 1 hr to sink a ship
I'm on my second patrol using TGW1.1a. Never saw a ship on the first patrol. A ship is spotted and I get the choices (you know the screen) so I dive to periscope depth (this is at 0400 hrs). Up periscope and after looking for quite a while I finally get locked onto the ship (using 10x).
While I'm on the subject of the periscope, in the normal SH3 in using the periscope and press the tab key, it brings the ship much closer; but when I press Tab key in TGW I get what looks like a "wall of something" . What is happening here? Anyway, back to the ship. It's a SMALL merchant. Fire 1, impact; Fire 2, impact, (now it's only a small merchant - how many torpedoes do I have to put into it) anyway, Fire 3; impact. Still the ship doesn't sink and get the credit. So I surface and approach with the intension of using the deck gun. At about 800 m I start the deck gun. I must have fired over 100 rounds. I took a look at how many shells I had left, and went to external camers 'cause I wanted a picture of the burning ship and as I'm switching back to deck gun. I just happen to see the words "She's going down". How come it's so different to sink a ship using TGW? If I have to wait for a half hour for my ship to sink so I get the credit in my diary for it, it doesn't make sense. Edit: Looked at my notes. 0457 went to periscope depth. 0554 "she's going down" |

Hey Rob GW1.1a uses the NYGM damage model which makes ships sink as if they are flooding. You need to fire your torps at different sections of the ship and when useing the deck gun you should fire below the water line. For a small merch you should be using no more than 2 torps aimed at different sections. Thn wait for a while say 20 mins game time then deside if you are going to need the deck gun.
When using the deck gun i useualy fire 10 or so shots and then wait for a while to see what effect that has. Hope this helps:up: |
Hi CHris
But, what if I'm attacking a convoy, I'll be taken out by the destroyers before my first ship sinks, to get the credit for it. |
If you are using weapons officer assistance and use auto lock on to target, then many times you'll discover that each shot hits at the same location and Like Chris said, your shots need to be in different locations, then normally she'll go down without too much of a wait.

Hi Rob if you hit a ship that is in a convoy and it does not sink it should at least slow down or put on a list or even be dead in the water. This gives you the chance to get in postion to finsh it off or just wait till the convoy moves on and mop up what is dead in the water in front of you.

Okay, but what about this periscope zoom thing?
|
My periscope only zooms out to x10. Never to x15:hmm: :hmm:

I have never looked at the zoom power when the periscope first comes up, so I don't know what it is. |
Hey rob could you post a screenshot of what it looks like when you change view with the tab key.
The zoom power is if i rightly recall is on the bottom left of the scope view. |
