I think that, in addition to single-player missions, there should be "observation" missions which let you experience the battles and engagements of the Pacific (Midway, for example) without having to go there in your Career.

Either make it single-player missions with the player's sub starting near the events, or invent some "observation mode" where you just have a free-flying camera and the "</> camera" (and possibly some other features) and can just sit there and watch the fight play out. Would be nice to have as a "rolling demo" at presentations, too, if implemented correctly.

DEFINETLY!

That was my biggest gripe with the Silent Hunter III missions, besides from the lack of historical information (at least the descriptions were very well-written). Missions can be far more than just setting up an attack and that's it. When I make missions, I try to make them open-ended, dynamic, and challenging, and with a detailed briefing including friendly units, known and expected enemy units, known and expected hazards (sunken ships, mine-fields, etc.), weather conditions, and so on.

Empires: Dawn of the Modern World, while an RTS, not a sub simulator, is a textbook example of how single-player missions should be done.

I like this idea.

Thresher's attempts to get into Pearl just after the Dec 7th attack. Thresher was hounded by friendly aircraft and surface patrols and had great difficulty in getting in. A single mission could have the player commandng Thresher, but with allegience set to enemy, so that the blue units attack if detected, until the player reaches a cetain point near/in Pearl.

That one CO's joke about a convoy of six tankers guarded by sixteen destroyers - against one submarine.

Just for the sake of a good challenge's sake (try it in Silent Hunter III)!

How about having Historical Single Patrols to match historical patrols.

Of course, have it use the dynamic engine but give the boat the same patrol orders it had historically and throw in whatever custom TFs/convoys that need to be thrown in alongside generic traffic.

Hmmm......Looking through my trusty bible ("Silent Victory").

1. The USS Barb's sinking of the Japanese CVE Unyo and the tanker Azusa.

2. The sinking of the Japanese CVE Chuyo by the USS Sailfish. The Chuyo was carrying 21 survivors from the sinking of the USS Sculpin, the Sailfish's sister ship.

3. The USS Tinosa's encounter with the Tonan Maru III.

4. The entering of Lingayen Bay by the S-38 during the Japanese invasion of the Phillippines in December, 1941.

Hey Neal, I sure would like to lend a helping hand with creating some of the historical scenarios for SHIV, I do have previous experience in this area (namely SH1).

"On December 7th, 1941, there were twenty one submarines attached to the U.S. Pacific Fleet based in Pearl Harbor: six V class, three of the P class and twelve T class subs although only eleven boats could actually be considered available for combat operations. Four were in Pearl Harbor at 7:55 am when the Japanese began the attack. The USS Narwhal, Dolphin, and Tautog were tied up at the sub base finger piers while the USS Cachalot was in the navy yard for repairs. As the first bombs began to fall on Ford Island Naval Air Station, the crews of the moored subs sprang to action and began firing on the Japanese torpedo bombers tracing their way to Battleship row (The USS Tautog is credited with downing a Japanese Kate bomber). By 10 o'clock, the attack was over. The submarine base survived undamaged, although a crewman was wounded during a strafing run."

I took the above from this source: http://www.valoratsea.com/subwar.htm

Now this would be exciting MP and SP.
